Well, we just got the word that we will most likely be out-sourced by May 1st this year, so I told the guys I'd check here for advice on Resume Services.

We are all computer professionals of one sort or another, and while our resumes are fairly up to date, most of us haven't had them touched up in a while, if ever.

Anybody use a service to do theirs?

Thanks!

Are you willing to take a 90% pay cut and move to Bangalore?

I really do feel for you, buddy.  My best friend moved to mainland China to teach English and live on the economy, because he couldn't find anything here even approaching what he had been making for either FCNBD Corporation (my old employer) or IBM Global.

I spent 2 years getting my SAIR GNU/Linux certification, and it is worthless.  I gave up on IT and went back to high-end security.  I am lucky as hell to have this, with all the piss-poor jobs I've had.

Good luck to you, and I will pray for your success.

There's no reason to use a service unless you're really hopeless.  Put together a resume that clearly and concisely says what you have done in the past and post it on sites like www.monster.com, www.dice.com, www.careerbuilder.com, etc.  Monster.com is the one that most recruiters use so you should put your resume there first. Flipdog.com is a good search engine for job listings.  It goes out and finds the ads unlike the others that just allow companies to place ads.

kpel308, I appreciate your prayers, and will pass them on to the rest of my crew.

Hoplophile, speaking strictly for myself, I'm just trying to get the best polish on my resume I can.

Thanks for the input so far, anybody else?

In your field I wouldn't put too much faith in Monster the volume is such that you drop way down the pile way too fast.  (I have used Monster as a Recruiter for Volt, Xontech, Hughes/Raytheon and a division of L-3).  Careerbuilder is pretty good.

Work on several boards.  Don't bother with resume services, several books give you the ideas you need. You definitely don't need mass produced generic resumes on fancy paper, those days are gone forever and they didn't last all that long.

Most of your submissions will be electronic and with word processing you can customize for almost every company you submit to. Also the shotgunning services are often ignored by companies, we get way too much garbage to spend time wading through it to find an occasional nugget.

Monster is pretty good for looking for openings though.  Remember it is horrendously large, and it is more cumbersome to search than to submit.
