Why is a 3 peice rod so much worse for my barrel vs the one peice rods? I have heard the screwed together joints can damage the barrel, but if the rod is a softer metal than the barrel how could it scratch? I have been using the one piece and only go from chamber to bore, but another shooter and I got into a discussion about it. So, what is the difference between the one piece dewey rods and the 3 peice military rods?

Biggest different is getting a *coated* one piece rod.

The next best would be a one-piece bronze/aluminum rod.

The three piece rods just give a joint that could have a sharp edge, collect carbon fouling, and possibly increase barrel wear of time and use.  The worst rods are the three piece steel, for obvious reasons.  Does this mean you are going to ruin a barrel if you use a three piece metal rod?  I think not.... but for my rifles, they are investments, and I want to keep them shooting as well as possible, for as long as possible.  I remove the whle rod question from the equation, by just using a 1 piece coated dewey.... and never looked back.  It's kind of a "why not" question.

The Otis bore snake is great, however the quality of the Dewey one piece coated rod is best.  Also use the crown gaurd/guide bushing.  Three piece rods can flex and cause damage to the rifling of the barrel.  A minor nick can adversely affect the trajectory of the round.  I clean muzzle to breech after I clean the chamber.  Then go back and do a wipe out of the chamber.  Use only copper/brass brushes and quality patches.  Even with rods made of a softer metal than the barrel, the lands in the bore have a sharp edge that can easily be damaged.  The joint of a sectional rod can dig into the edge of a land (land is high point and groove is the low point) causing a burr which may not be visible to the naked eye.  If you doubt it, have your barrel magnafluxed and take a look at it.  You will be surprised how much of the blue is left behind.  (works sorta like those red tablets they used to give you to teach you how to brush your teeth in E school)

Or build your own for about five bucks (including batteries) and spend the savings on gunpowder.

Don't waste your money on a cleaning rod. A old coat hanger straightened out  with the end bent into a loop works just as well.
