Any decent 17" LCD out there for < $500 or am I just dreaming? |

Go look at www.pricewatch.com. There are some decent LCDs for around $500 these days. The wewbsite will give you all you need to know to find the vendors that sell them. Unfortunately, some of the really good ones are still a bi pricey, but there are some bargains to be had if you look hard enough and don't have to have a big name on it |

You can get a 19" for that price. www.tigerdirect.com I've been to the local BestBuy and to my calibrated eyes it looks like there are a couple of screen manufactures that all the companies are wrapping in their own plastic and selling. I would recommend that you look at getting a monitor that supports both analog and DVI inputs as this monitor could last five or more years and DVI looks more and more popular. Also understand that LCD screens look good only at one resolution what they call the "native resolution". Using it at anything else and you might as well just poke your eyes out as you'll go blind. |

Using it at anything else and you might as well just poke your eyes out as you'll go blind. That used to be the case, but not anymore. My work laptop has a 15" display with a native resolution of 1600x1200. This is way too small for my old eyes, so I set the resolution to 1024x768 and it looks just fine. |

Many good 17in LCDs are under U$400: http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=305124&cm_ven=Performics&cm_cat=xpbargains%2Ecom&cm_pla=General&cm_ite=DDI%20Link&ref=performics http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=320-0657&category_id=4009 Most Dell 17in LCDs are under U$450. Try switching to large fonts. I run my 21" monitor at 1600x1200, but with large fonts everything is fine. |

Well, it took a while, and I spent more than I planned to. But I bought this for $569. (the Sony site adds your state sales tax, screw that) I really like Sony video products, plus you get 3 year warranty vs say Viewsonics 1 year and you have to eat 3 dead pixles on LCD.
