| In pursuit of the closest and most comfortable shave. Is a straight razor better than the modern 3 blade handles? What cities/states still allow a barber to offer shaves to their customers? |

I'd say that modern safety razors give a far closer shave. The difference is that only a pro can give a decent shave with a straight blade, and they could probably do even better with a safety razor. But then, the customer would feel screwed as he would feel like he paid for something he could have done himself. Don't listen to me, because it takes me 3 days to grow a '5 o'clock' shadow that someone would notice. Unless a business meeting is scheduled, it's not uncommon for me go go 5 days or so before I shave. |

From those on this very board I ditched my old Gillette Atra I had been using for 20 years or so and went to the Mach 3 Turbo. I am glad I did it. The Mach 3 is the best shave I have had in years. Before with the Atra, it looked like I shaved with a dull steak knife at times. I would cut and leave razor burn all the time. The Mach 3 is much smoother and closer too. The only drawback is the blade cost. However, go to Ebay and you can get them for about half price shipping included. With a straight razor, there is a whole lot of skin prep needed before and after in order to really make it feel good. You also have to be very careful with that blade. |
