I didn't realize that auto-retracting bladed utility knives existed until I brought one home. It wouldn't have been so bad if the slider was directly connected to the blade, but there is a stupid friction clutch involved that allows the blade to snap back in if you back off of the downward pressure on the slider slightly.

Yeah, it says "auto-retracting utility knife" in small letters on the package. It didn't occur tome to read the fine print, since it is just a utility knife.

Fuck whoever came up with that nonsense with a sharpened broomstick.

We have them at work. I normally have a standard Stanley 99 or a folding Husky on me.

I finally got one of them to jam up so the blade wouldn't retract unless I pulled the button back. Another guy promptly picked it up and fixed it and said, "There ya go, fixed it for you."

I guess my wolf stare was obvious because he said sorry.

I fucking hate those things. They are unsafe in and of themselves.

If you're talking about the safety knifes that only expose the blade when you put pressure on the nose and then retract automatically when pressure is no longer there, yeah they suck aids infected monkey dicks.

Never seen one, but they are another useless invention in the name of "safety".

Required to use them at work. Some people are too stupid to use a real knife. Sometimes everyone else even does something stupid. They exist for a reason, and save the company a good deal of money from the reduction in number of injuries. I kept mine when I left for a while, worked somewhere else where they give you the cheap shit stamped metal box knives, threw that piece of shit away and used my safety knife - not only is it safer for the user and everyone around them, it is also a lot faster that using two hands to constantly extend and retract the cheap knife. A regular utility knife and the benefits are less obvious, but I never want to see one of the folded stamped metal pieces of shit again.
