buy a used police vest and toss it in a backpack for $100. Sure the vest isn't new, but it would be double thickness... Or just buy yourself a decent ballistic vest rather than just have "if they shoot me in the back" protection.

They all rape you price and feature wise.

I replaced the frame sheet in a very grey man but handy Vertx backpack with a commercial 3a Kevlar panel, and put a second panel in the quick access rip tab area for the front.
