I got to keep my issued one. I think it is made by Gerber

I have a Gerber and a Glock.  I like the handle of the Gerber, but the saw in the Glock is awesome.

For car camping, I prefer pre-tri-fold wood handled USGI e-tools (M-1943 or M-1951).  You can use one of these to attach it to a molle panel.  It's not perfect, but it works.

Yeah, go with the wood handled one as opposed to the newer trifold.  The trifold is more compact but tends to trifold itself while you use it.

The glock one is pretty good. It'd be my first choice due to weight, though it's probably not
as durable as USGI. If I have to carry one, it's the one I carry, but I got USGI ones for the
car kit.

The legit USGI ones are heavy but OK, there's a lot of knockoffs that are complete crap,
so you have to find someone that sells surplus that actually knows what they're selling and
isn't lying. One tip-off on real surplus ones is they usually come with a plastic holder with
alice clips that's in the process of disintegrating.

For backpacking, I've never needed more than a trowel to dig cat holes, but YMMV.  If I was going to bring an e-tool backpacking, I'd probably go with the USGI tri-fold or the Glock.

I have a Glock and a Cold Steel.  The Glock is handy when you want or need to use it in an unusual position like as a hoe.  The CS is built like a tank and I've sharpened the side of the blade up enough to do some chopping with it.  I have sheathes for both but they only ride in the truck.  If I had to choose one to go on my pack I'd probably take the CS because It's tougher and I'd rather have my gerber folding saw than the Glocks saw.

Holy crap! That's hilarious.

1) how many forms of "dig" did they use? "dig!" "shovel!" "excavate!"
2) I expected John Wayne to show up. The music had a definite "Western movie" feel.
3) using it as a shield around the 4:00 mark was a riot!

I got a couple of the German military surplus tri-folds from Sportsman Guide. Good quality. Probably better than the USGI I was issued.

I also have a few of the Russian Spetsnaz wood handled ones marketed by Cold Steel I believe. Very good also, especially as a weapon or a chopper.

I got a a USGI surplus one in the sheath. I think I paid $40?  It was in brand new condition, never used.

I have both the Gerber & Glock. The Gerber is like a Marine e-tool & if you think you're going to use a small shovel--it's the better choice.

20' of hard digging with a Glock or any mini-shovel that has a handle that sticks in your palm will ruin your love life

That's why T-handles are so popular, saves your meat beater.

Don't forget leather work gloves.

The Swiss Army Entrenching Tool is second to none. I have several dating from the late 30s to early 40s. Unless you set the handle afire it's pretty much indestructible. Fuck all that folding shit, may as well get you a relic hunter's digging knife.

Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel is what I use.......Digs like a champ and comes Sharp enough to chop small limbs and roots.

Ground is very very rocky had a Chinese cheap POS that barely worked, granted good metal trowel would have worked maybe. The plastic trowels would not have a chance. Ground where I am is all roots and rocks with dirt as fill

Sounds like this is what most of you folks need......I'm not being a smart ass either. You would be surprised what you can do with it.

The Cold Steel Spetsnaz shovel has not moving parts and it tough as nails.  Somebody is making a lightweight Ti model also.

First time I've ever seen a Chinese product actually cost more ($65 shipped) than a US product, but it does look handy.

I have a 1980s vintage Soviet etool. Non folding, low tech.

Thing is solid as fuck. Can't use it to heat your canteen cup with a heat tab, but good to dig/crush your enemy's skull.
