Good guys needed a rifle, badly.  Not surprised they didn't have one given its the people's republic of Murdermore.

Glad it turned out ok.

Seems like 00 buckshot every time the perp poked his head out of the rear bus exit could have brushed him back until a rifle was in place.

Maybe that was the strategy of the cop with the shotgun; can't tell about the timing since it is a composite of multiple cameras.

ETA: yep, they did. Also, my uncle dint do nuffin.

A niece of Erb, Ciara Bean, said she believed police could have fired at Erb "with a non-lethal shot."

"I wish Blaine would've chosen a different path and decided not to go out and do what he did," she said. "Then my family would still have a part of it that's now missing … I'm not justifying what he did, I just wish there were different methods of stopping what he did other than killing him."

Good reason why shotguns suck for officers. ARs definitely last longer than a few shots then being thrown on the ground.

Yeah that shotgun fight was a joke.

Burn 4 rounds and then toss it?

They don't have rifles except on their Tac team, from what I understand.

Officer using the shotgun did the best he could with the equipment he had. Bead sight, no extra ammo on the gun itself. It appears he was using Winchester Super-X low recoil buckshot...which, I believe, uses plain lead pellets. Plain lead pellets suck donkey dick when you shoot them through laminated windshield glass. They deform terribly and go all over the place. Except, of course, where you want them to go.

Plus I'm willing to bet a team membership he'd never patterned that load in that particular shotgun. Or that he had no more than your typical 5 rounds a year fam fire with the shotgun. He was set up to fail.

A shotgun with better sights, extra ammo mounted on the gun, and Federal's 0133 LE Flight-Control buckshot load would have been a much different story.

The bus video shows Erb enter the bus and pay his fare. Others on the bus can be heard humming, laughing and talking. Later, two officers responding to the robbery call, including Slocum, are seen entering the bus to look for the robbery suspect later identified as Erb.

Usually prohibited by policy. And that was most likely a pool shotgun...meaning a weapon he had to turn in at the end of his shift. You're not allowed to make changes to the weapons or carry more than the approved number of rounds for them.

Fucktarded policy, but fucktarded policies are what a lot of police administrators specialize in.

It was likely all he could bring. And it was shitty ammo to boot.

Federal Flight-Control buckshot with plated pellets was invented for a reason...but most police departments know precisely dick about using the shotgun as a defensive implement. They believe bullshit myths about aiming and ammo and then are shocked to death when the officers they have fire 5 rounds per year through a bead-sighted pool shotgun nobody has ever fucking patterned doesn't perform well.

IMAGINE THAT.

Limited by policy to the rounds in the magazine. Standard mag capacity on that style of 870 is 4 rounds in the mag.
6/28/2017 11:39:08 PM EDT

Shotgun:
Needs a sling (I know it's taboo)
Velcro shot-cards/side saddle (if ammo doesn't live on the gun it most likely won't go to the fight)
Better ammo (plated pellets at the minimum, Fed FliteControl is best)
Better sighting system (bead sights are so mid 20th Century)

The officer with his own rifle with a sighted-in RDS, 30 rds of Gold Dot 64gr SP, and the officer having that in trunk instead of the plane-Jane 870 and that gun fight ends with the perp dead in the door well of that bus 2-3 minutes before it does with pistol volleys.

They did indeed. At multiple points in the video you can see people who took cover by the van and the tree fleeing when they figure out that rounds are incoming.

Also notice how the officers used their cruisers for cover. They hugged up on that cover real tight. It's natural. It's also a bad idea. Bullets that bounce off of car parts will end up hitting you if you crowd the cover. It also blinds you to what is going on. Getting a couple of feet back from the vehicle gives you better cover (the bullets tend to go over your head) and you can see more of what is going on.

Of course, you need to have some good vehicle tactics training to know that.

Exactly.

I have a buddy who is in a department that's just as fucked up.

They have bead-sighted 870s. No ammo on the gun. No spare ammo allowed to be carried. Just the 4 rounds in the magazine.

They fire range guns 5 times a year.

The actual duty shotguns that get stuck in cruisers are never fired, never cleaned, never lubricated. It's 9 kinds of fucked up. But that's typical of police use of shotguns.

Police departments who have figured out how to actually use shotguns well are the rare exception...and they fucking waste bad guys. The rest...well...perform like this.

Officer firing indiscriminately at 9:45, 4 shots at the white van, no target.  Only shooting on reported location.  I think he missed the guys break for the white van from the bus but I couldn't ID a target for him to fire.  8:58 you can just see the guy duck behind the van and he had a snapshot there.

These body cams are great for AAR, we can quarterback them after the shootings but we're not there in the officer's shoes.  I would just say those 4 shots were with a visual on the target.  The shotgun action was a good shoot.  He could see the guy thru the window and had shots there.
