FB has some new system of "Pay for it through Facebook!" in the for sale groups.

I am kind of wondering if they are shooting for more of a "paypal" type service from which to skim money.

That does open the door for "paid subscription content" for blogs, groups, and live videos.

It won't work, they are too far behind and they are one of the worst offenders for censorship and everybody knows it. Nobody will hang their hat on their little side business there.

Facebook has a problem.  Younger folks (Gen Z, youngest Millennials) are not signing up for it in droves like Gen Z X and the other Millennials did, because "Facebook is where my parents hang out."  It's not "cool" anymore.

ETA:  I had a typo, meant to say Gen Z and youngest Millennials aren't signing up as much as Gen X did...

And worst offenders for respecting privacy TOC's, and worst offenders for security, . . . .

That being said, they have enough critical mass that if they get exclusives to good content, and offer the publishers the full suite of their info graph on their users, they might pull it off.

The old chestnut that Facebook users aren't the customers, they're the product;  that applies to all the publishers and business on FB as well.  Free to the publisher is pretty enticing when you have a bottom line to even out.

That's not what I got from this article.  I think they are trying to tie subscriber status to other publications into facebook, ie, you can subscribe to WaPo or some other news editorial through facebook. Facebook would be insane to start charging to use its service.  It already makes infinitely more money off of selling its users data and marketing in its apps/sites.  The loss of subscriber information to sell would FAR outweigh the gain of charging those who would remain on facebook if it became a pay for use service.

Edit-  Jesus just read through this thread.  None of you guys actually read the articles do you?

LOL.  Bringing more content and more revenue to multiple companies to the market is not going to kill it.  It will further solidify it as a content delivery platform.  This will only serve to make Facebook even more prominent and stronger.  Since they already censor content, it will give the left more power to push their agenda and silence the right as well.

Of course many on the right refuse to engage and then just complain about how biased things are.  Well companies do cater their product to their audience which in this case is mainly the center and left.  So look at this way, the Facebook market share is an indicator of the opposition to everything you believe politically.  Facebook is going to get larger and many here proudly claim "I don't use social media (even though you are on this site)".  It take about 2 brain cells to see how this is going to play out for you all.  Adapt and survive...

Some of us read the articles and understand what was being talked about.  But most don't, which is why Hillary was crying about Fake News.  It is also why the biased MSM is constantly running headlines "Trump in Trouble"...etc.  They publish an exaggerated title based on something they took out of context and speculated on.  That used to be how media like "The Blaze" operated but now the MSM is behaving the same way.

I will help the people who didn't read the article.  Facebook is looking to be a digital clearinghouse/market place for paid content.  Writers can use Facebook to promote their personal content.  It has nothing to do with people posting pictures of what they had for lunch.  Following my previous post, the correct action would be for conservative people to start using Facebook's platform to promote and deliver their content to Facebook users.

I do not recall exactly where I saw this stat but I have seen it several times over the past few years.  Young people might sign up for facebook accounts, but they are not using them nearly as much as previous cohorts.  Some of it has to do with parents telling their 12yo kids, "OK, you can have a facebook account, but you WILL accept my friend request so I can monitor your public activity and you WILL give me your password so I can periodically review your private messages."  That tends to put a damper on tween/teen enthusiasm for chatting on facebook.

Yes, that seems very helicopter-parenty, but I'm a former prosecutor and former defense attorney who handled plenty of child sex crimes.  Given what I know about online predators and young kids' susceptibility to trusting strangers, I would do it too.
