I was watching a recent video on Smarter Every Day's Youtube channel. Destin was interviewing a surgeon who's a solar eclipse nerd.  This guy even created a smart phone app to time the exact timing if you are in the path.  Also audible cues to look for things other than just looking up (possible snake shadows, 360 degree sunset, when to get best eclipse pics).

I'm in central Alabama and this will pass north of us in TN.  Seeing how this will be fairly close and it is supposed to be a really good eclipse I'd really like to investigate the exact center path. To see this 360 sunset, I'd like to GPS some ridge or mountaintop vantage points I can access, but path maps I've googled are grainy photos.

Anyone here aware of an interactive map or .gpx file for center path?  A .gpx  track file would be perfect because I have some mapping software I could drop it in to use for planning.

Here ya' go!  All kinds of goodies along with integrated google maps allowing you to pinpoint a location and get the latitude and longitude, start time and duration anywhere along the route.

Cool! Will they blame the sun being blocked on the Russians or Trump?

I've got access to a 30 story rooftop in Nashville for the eclipse and my company won't give me the time off.  I had friends planning on flying in for it.  No dice.

My house is in the direct path so I should get 2 minutes and 39 seconds of total darkness.

Depending on work, I may or may not be able to go to my friend's house in South Carolina for it.

Man I hope so much that I'll be able to make this work.

No guarantee though.

I bought a 5 pack of eclipse glasses anyway.

We plan on being in TN for it, as it passes about 3/4 mile from my place.  It says we will get 2mins and 35 seconds of a full eclipse.

I've never been able to be in the right place at the right time before. My house is right on the edge of the band that should be able to see the full eclipse. I may drive south to try and get closer to the middle. Put in for a day of leave a couple months back.

We're going up to our place in Sevierville.  Unfortunately, we'll still have to find a place to watch the eclipse.

I'm in Columbia, SC. Apparently the best place to view it.  Perfect timing too.  It"'s move in weekend for students at USC when parents book up all the hotels and now all the sun watchers have them booked up.

We were talking at work the other day about taking the day off. But then again, I have the key to rooftop access for our 5 story downtown building.

I'll have to drive a bit, but I'd like see a full one at least once.

I recall accidently viewing a partial one back in the 80's. I was at work in a building where the did PVC pipe testing. The roof had pin holes in it from past pipe explosions.  It got darkish all the sudden and I look down at the floor. All the spots of light (from the pin holes) on the floor were crescents.  I puzzled a minute and figured the only thing that could do that was an eclipse.  Me and my pard walked to the fab shop and grabbed some welding helmets and watched the rest of it. Would be cool to see a full one.

I'm rethinking the Smokies after looking at the map.  That road will be the flashmob from hell the day of.  The road gets backed up near Clingman's Dome if a bear and cubs cross. I can only imagine the traffic on that day. Unless you camp out before, you'd probably get stuck in a shaded valley in bumper to bumper.

I will probably take the day off and go up to Rabun County in NE Georgia to see it

That was my original plan but if crowds are anywhere near what people are predicting, I'm afraid you would have to get there the day before.

I would hate to get stuck in traffic in some sucky spot.

One of the most widely available filters for safe solar viewing is a number 14 welder's glass, available through welding supply outlets.

I used a piece of 14 glass for the Venus transit.  NASA recommends it on their website.
