Old timers around here called them Messenger Bees, claimed they wouldn't sting you. I never grabbed one to find out.

Yup. Looks like a European Hornet - a queen at that.
I have one in a jar on my windowsill - dead, of course.

Nope, too small and colors are wrong

Cicada killers abdomens are mostly black and are black at the tip

The scar that was on my leg for years  disagrees with your old timers.  I don't know if the North American Asshole bit me or stung me but it hurt like a mofo and I was bleeding from it.  I kill with extreme prejudice.

1983 American Quarter. Not very deadly in its reclining state. Also not worth as much as its silver Brothers.

It is indeed a European Hornet.

Common here, and in fact is our only true hornet. "Bald face hornets" are actually in the yellow jacket family.

They are big, scary looking and fly loudly, but are reasonably docile and beneficial unless the nest is a problem for you. Make no mistake, they will defend the nest.

One factoid is that they are the only local bee/yellow jacket/wasp/hornet species that will fly at night. This leads the stragglers to join moths around lights, and can freak city boys out.

I've heard the term good news bee, but I think they are different.

That looks like a Japanese Hornet.  Well, KMA.  I just looked up the difference between Jap and Euro and that's a Euro.
