Had dinner with a friend and her son is enrolling in a tech school. We were discussing his options and it got me thinking.

Which program would be more valuable today?

20 months training, certification in commercial HVAC?

Or 20 months training, certification in industrial electrical maintenance?

I'd go with hvac- around here companies will pay for you to go for industrial maintenance.

Right now welders are in short supply, but I suppose most of the trades are. If he is a outside kind of kid he can go that way with welding, if he is a indoor type there are tons of jobs their too. My boy graduated Tech HS with a welding cert. He just turned 20 and is making $2000 a week on the oil wells in ND. He has been there 3 months now.

I would go electrical, for two reasons.

1) It scares a lot of people away. Hell, even you aren't sure about it. Less people in it gives you a better shot.

2) It has room for advancement, if you chose to learn outside your job. You could get into automation, robotics, all sorts of stuff.
