Lady posted in a FB thread that she handed the valet parking attendant $1.00 and he threw it back at her and said, "$5.00 is the minimum tip we get."
I thought tips were at the giver's discretion. My thoughts is the driver was cheap and the valet was in the wrong. IF there is no posted $ amount, you get what you get. What say you? Do you tip? If so, How much? |
A tipping thread in GD?
Depends. If it was a hotel or casino in Monaco then I could see the valet expecting a certain amount. Pretty much anywhere else? FOAD with that bullshit. I usually tip $1 or $2 (sometimes up to $5 depending where/what it is). Most of the time I encounter valet is in Vegas. They never look at it and just shove it in their pocket. Of course now that the MGM casinos have effectively taken away complimentary valet (others will follow soon) I tip them a little more if we drive out there. Other places where it's still complimentary they get one or two bucks. They park so many cars they can easily make over a $100 a day in tips at the other casinos. |
Bull shit. I was a velvet as a summer job a couple years. This was 13-14 years ago though. We usually got $1-2 tip. The most I ever got was a $20. It isn't really a "tip" if it's mandatory then is it? If someone ever did that to me I would definitely ask a manager to clarify their tipping policy for the valet and me. |

I tip up front on arrival and tip on departure, but it's a bit less, unless they got it super quickly or offered to help my girl or myself with our luggage. I don't actually want their help and always politely decline, but it shows they put some extra effort into it and I respect that. I tip up front so the guy is appreciative and will maybe be a bit more careful with my vehicle in the garage or traffic. I usually leave some loose quarters and a few $1 bills in the cup holder to test their honesty and integrity. If exactly the same amount is there when I get my vehicle back I assume they were honest and didn't dig through my stuff.
Unrelated but I also tip housekeeping for multi night stays, up front on the first full day of the stay, as it almost always leads to better service and some extra minibar items/drinks that don't impact the final inventory they do to charge you. I usually leave a note saying it's a tip for them and that I appreciate the service. I'll then leave a couple bucks out in the open on a diff table or dresser with no note. They take that ~50% of the time it seems. I've never bitched about it or done anything, but it's always interesting in a social experiment kind of way to me. |

I also tip housekeeping. It was back early 2000s and this casino executive and his wife that I knew were vacationing in Jamaica. They came back and got their film developed and there were was a picture of a black ass with their toothbrushes inside. ![]() |

Occasionally I stay at hotels where there is no other option but to valet park. Quoted:

I don't valet. My legs still work. Grocery stores with valets are always a bit weird though. |

2 to 3 bucks is it. Most of the place down here you can't park your own car so its figured into thw cost of your meal the wait staff bring you food and drinks you ask for. Did the guy who parked you car clean it no but he did take any loss change he saw. |

Yep, as well as certain restaurants. Grocery stores with valets are always a bit weird though. Quoted:
