This guy wrote the following message to the city facebook page regarding a possible panhndling ordiance. His face book page states he is a lover of politics and animals and that he is running for city council this year.
This is a message to the council: I cannot believe the language that was used in today's town paper to discuss panhandling. These are the poorest, most disenfranchised people in our community and you want to turn your backs on them and give them a criminal record, furthering hurting their chances of getting into a job? I am disappointed. No, I am mad. These people need our help. We need programs that will organize the poor and get them more involved in our community in a positive way such that they can get everything they need to get their life started again. I am incredulous that Councilman X thinks that it is so easy to just make a sufficient income in this economy. How out of touch are you, Councilman? Nobody WANTS to be where these people are. They are there because they have no other option, or at the very least they sincerely feel like that have no other option. I find any ordinance that criminalizes panhandling to be absolutely disgusting and completely unamerican. I will be at every meeting to make sure that the people who are literally too poor to even know that these meetings happen have a voice in our community, and if such an ordinance passes I will not rest until it is repealed. Thank you. |
| While I was a government employee I met with a number of the homeless. Many are there by choice. Yeah, They might be mildly retarded or wacky, but they don't want to live by a clock, have to report to work, have to take a shower, or have anyone telling them that they have to do anything. That last one is the biggest one. It is their 'freedom' and they would rather have that 'freedom' over anything else. |

One around Atlanta was found to bring in like $60k a year, found the brand new $45k Ram 1500 he bought parked down the street from where he "worked" tax free... Always try to offer respect and still ignore panhandlers. It is a lifestyle choice. Of course there are a very few that are really incapable of existing without begging, but probably less than 1 in 10. Most are enjoying near unconditional freedom from any responsibilities, and living comfortably, much more so than "being a bum" should be. |
