The following story is true. I swear I did not make this up
I get a service call from a property management company on one of their rental properties. The complaint? The microwave oven is dead. We make it out there and what do I find? A house rented to a bunch of college students. The problem? The microwave oven was... unplugged. Tested the oven thoroughly and everything works as designed. Perfect! Fast forward two weeks and we get an urgent message from the property management that now the oven REALLY doesn't work. OK so maybe the original problem reared it's ugly head finally... it happens. I head on back there today and what do I find? The microwave is unplugged... yes AGAIN! One of the renters actually asked "WHO KEEPS UNPLUGGING IT?" How do I know? I don't live here!... tested it again and all works fine (surprise!) Seriously... Am I being pranked? Ashton Kutcher are you pulling one over on me? The property management company is a great account and told him today I would not bill him for it. He said "OH NO! You bill us and I am making their parents pay for it!" |
|
On another service call (more college students) I get this complaint: Oven/Range does not work.
When I get out there, 20 something year old says "Oh yeah, a couple of other things I noticed when the oven died. The oven light now doesn't work, The clock stopped working and the electric ignition for the burners all stopped at the same time. This thing is a real piece of shit!" (How many of you already know the answer as to what is wrong?) Didn't even take a screwdriver or meter out... followed the power cord from the range, into the living room where it was unplugged and the Xbox was plugged in... ...FFS |

I deal with this all the time.
Client: "OUR INTERNET IS NOT WORKING, NOTHING WORKS, OMG!!!!!!" Me: "Did you power cycle the modem like I showed you" Client: "Yes! Out internet still isn't working" Me: "Can you connect to the wireless and not get on the network" Client: "Just come out here and fix it pls" Drive out there, power cycle modem or turn wifi on on their phone/tablet. Collect check for service call, move on. Even better, I now have remote power management at many of my client's homes. I can fix their problems without getting up off my couch. Most of these people are 50+ year old high net worth working professionals. I have one client that is a PHD that has a medical research building with his name on it. Dude is the dumbest smart person I know. |

I had to help a Boomer out of his truck once. He was locked inside of it and he couldn't figure out how to get out.
It died on him & he couldn't get out because the power locks weren't working. I told him to pull the door handle on the inside & he was genuinely surprised that it worked. People be retarded, yo. |

My daughter was stuck on the freeway with a dead car. Called AAA and they had a 90 minute wait time. Called me, I was out there in 20 minutes and got her going. (Headlight fluid ran out)

| Being a career IT pro... I've seen many similar things. Most users are embarrassed by their own stupidity when it takes me two seconds to find the unplugged cable, their keyboard tray mashing the keys, etc. I always just chuckle and say that I appreciate it being something easy to fix. The DIFFICULT fixes always seem to be on Fridays. I can set my calendar to that. |

Most new cars don't come with a spare. That's why so many cars get towed in for a flat tire these days. You get a tire inflator with a tube of sealant instead now.
So let me get this straight they are paying $15,000.00 plus for a car with out a spare? I won't be buying one. |

Could be worse. Could be full of spiders. Last call yesterday I had to replace an ice machine. Went to the valve, wont shut off.... Went to the main outside to the house, Frozen shut... SO I had to go to the street to turn off the water... open up the cover and just COVERED in black widow eggs and webs... Yeahhhhhhhhh. After a good long cry... I told her there was nothing wrong and left.... call someone else. Nah, I braved it, shut it off, did the repair. |

Didn't some old guy die in a Corvette a couple years ago because the battery died and he couldn't figure out how to unlock and open the door so he sat trapped in the car for a few days and died?
Here's the problem, there's always been stoopid people, the issue is you are now entering a point in time when a generation of coddled 1960's born Baby boomers have now raised a generation to adulthood (the millennials). This is why the millennials are DOUBLE Down dumb as their parents were worthless and well can't really spread any knowledge when you're a shithead yourself. |

Could it potentially be that the microwave keeps having issues, so they unplug it, when you plug it back in it works again?
We used to have a microwave in our office that did just that, finally the garbage died and was replaced with no issues ever since. It could also be a leaf licker resident there that unplugs it to save on power. I know we used to have a co worker who did this shit to all the appliances, drove everyone up the wall. |

I was bitching because the lug nuts were tight and I was having to put out to break them. He laughed and said "Want me to go get the truck and tow it to the shop?" Then told me how many dbags couldn't even find the spare or jack. |

Huh? What kind of range was this that was in the kitchen but had a cord long enough to be plugged into an outlet in the living room? No outlets behind the appliances? |

FWIW, I have been teaching both of my boys (12 and 15) basic "Man Stuff" since they were little. From basic construction, to automotive maintenance, cooking, hygiene, logic, money, social behavior, and all manner of outdoor experiences, they have a pretty comprehensive suite of life skills.
I know it's essentially spitting into the wind against the popular tide of national idiocy, but at least these two won't enter adulthood as mirror-fogging idiots with no practical skills. So, not ALL is lost. |

Same here. Mine are 9 and 14. They will not be prissy little fucks who don't know how to figure shit out. Anyone who can't do all these things should kill themselves, unless they are wheelchair bound. Especially with access to the internet. Quoted:

He has the brains to do it (granted he is only 13 right now) but I make him help me change brakes, oil, repair wiring, plumbing etc etc... I CAN NOT send him out in this world without the skills and become a laughing stock on ARFCOM.
