Thinking about making a blade similar to this video. Not necessarily a karambit, but similar methods will be used. I have been collecting wood for awhile, and hope i can make enough charcoal and get some coals going good to heat treat the metal. The metal I'm using is a scrap piece of bar, i have no idea if it's any good for a knife.

Before i get all crazy with the cutting wheels and grinders, is a wood fire going to get it hot enough?

I'm trying to spend $0 and get exactly what i want. Likelihood of that actually happening, 31.7% i guess.

I think the guy in the video is using coal, by it way it sparks, but it could be charcoal

The angle grinder wasn't working well so i went to a jigsaw and followed up with a healthy amount of filing. It's ready for heat treat now. Going to get the fire going tomorrow.

Feels good in the hand. I'd like to match it to one of my revolver grips. Can't decide which one.

You have lots more filing to do before heat treating........

The maker in the video did use charcoal.  Looks like the lump charcoal you can buy for your BBQ.  Do not use briquettes.  They have way too many additives.

On your profiled blank, are you still planning on making the karambit?

You have hours of work before thinking about heat treated.  Use a forge, not a plain fire.

Have lots of wood ready to go, you'll need it.

I'll never understand why people put time and effort into making a knife out of mystery steel when 1095 can be had for about $3.00 per blank once you cut it down to size.

At the very least, harden a small piece with a torch and do a file test to see if it is even hardenable steel.

I have about 15 gallons worth of charcoal i made (3 buckets). I was debating if i should go ahead and get the edges roughed out. It'd probably be easier while the metal is soft. Wasn't sure if it would overheat the edge??

I have zero training, have no friends with training, and have only watched one youtube video. I have no idea what I'm doing. I make shit all the time as a hobby, never a knife though.

If that is going to be the width of the handle it is probably a bit too narrow.  See how it turns out and adjust for the next one.

Heat treated a small cut off piece and it hardened! Decided i would start the edge angles. Glad i did, filing this much isn't for the typical basement dweller. Thinking about putting serrations along the spine....

About 95% of the steel you find laying around is either 1018 (new mild steel) or A36 which can be just about anything they this on the crucible.   Sounds like you got lucky and it is probably a36.  1018 will not harden.  Because a36 is random recycled steel you may have barely enough to harden.

If you want a piece of known steel let me know.   I will gladly send you a piece.

I have made few knives.

The key to getting a hot fire is air. Hook up a hair dryer to increase  the temp.

What steel is it?

If you need tips Use YouTube to look up Walter sorrels, has a number of videos that can help explain the process.

Yes the truly old Nicholson and pre 1960 files were usually W1.  However later files of the cheaper variety may have been case hardened.   Not good for knife making.

I figured my hourly rate when I first started. I think it was 85 cents. I make a bit more now but can't quit my day job.

I made this (first knife ever) using a jig and a belt grinder for the grinds.  The one I'm working on now are freehand grinds, I like this process (freehand) better.
5/7/2017 5:21:42 PM EDT

Free hand grinding takes practice but once you learn how your blades will be so much better.   A knife blade is 3 dimensional.  Jigs only allow for 2.  Good looking blade there esp for first try.

This is my 3rd knife project.  Done basic shaping and grinding.  Pre heat treat.  Freehand ground.  Each one gets just a little better.  I'm diggin this one so far.  The journey is the best part.
