I'm looking for ideas and options to carry in a standard backpack, not one designed for that purpose.
I have a unassuming camelback that is going to start accompanying me to work and I'd like to secure it instead of just tossing it in a compartment.

Oops, sorry, I wasn't clear enough.
Not looking for pistol recommendations, but for how to secure a pistol.

Pocket holster, velcro strap, and needle and thread? I have an old Camelbak Mule with an outside utility pocket that would carry a pocket pistol or J frame perfectly that way.

A holstered pistol slips right down inside the water reservoir compartment.

That's how I carry mine, which separates it from the rest of the items in the bag nicely, and it's easy to get to without having to look.

I guess this won't work for you though.

Install a strap, or use an existing inner pocket that you can secure a holster to or velcro on holster and inside of bag

I like something like this to carry stuff with a pack.   Prefer without the bottle, but I found this picture
