Getting ready to get on a plane. 16 hours.

My previous record was 11 and it sucked.

I have TPB Season 11 downloaded and purchased the $30 wifi for ARFCOM surfing.

What's your longest?

Sissy.  Travel more, flights may suck but you're getting to where you need to go.  Find ways to pass the time, and spend more time in flight standing or sleeping.

I'm going to NZ next year around this time. From LAX though.

Since I used CC points for the flight I sprung for the first class upgrade. I'll be drinking heavily and going to sleep.

Did Atlanta to Honolulu last month and I liked to died.  The worst was hours 6-8.  After that it was getting close to the end and before that the in-flight movies held my interest.  At least it was an A300, so I could walk some laps around the plane.

The one in my buddy's plane when the oil pressure went to zero. I knew something was wrong when he said "huh" and started tapping on one of the gauges.

It wasn't that long, but it felt like an eternity.  Good news! The gauge broke!

My longest was Elmendorf AFB, Alaska to Rock Hampton, Australia. About twenty hours, two tankers, and  then about 30 minutes over the drop zone before landing.

I was in #2 of a 6 ship formation.  It took us almost ten hours to get all six jets gassed up with the tiny regional airport fuel trucks.

At least I could lay down in the crew rest area up stairs.  I felt bad for the Army dudes crammed in the back with all thier gear, then they had to jump out the damn thing.  God bless 'em.

17 hours. Chitcago to Joberg...with a 4 hour delay in Asa due to the locals having a bit of a firefight in the area.

Back then, South African airways 747's were only half booked, and the crew encouraged finding unoccupied seating to stretch out on and snooze....as well as partaking of as many Castle and Lions as you wish, so it wasn't bad.

Being jammed into an airbus with a sweating fatbody American on each side for 7hours, is much, much worse.

LA to Sydney was something like 15-16 hours but it wasn't bad in business class. Its still just crazy getting eight hours of sleep and waking up to see you have seven hours of flight time left.

One time I managed to sleep the ENTIRE flight from Tokyo narita to Atlanta. In economy aisle seat but with no one next to me.  The guy sitting across the aisle next to me couldn't believe it. Lol.

ATL to Johannesburg, baby. Economy class. At least the guy next to us was entertaining. Dude had driven all over Africa and survived being white.

Almost 20 hours in the air on the way back. Add in time waiting to take off and deplane, and it was more like 23 hours. Did I mention it was economy class? Work was paying for the tickets, so economy it was.

Fuck you, dude who reclined.

Civilian flight- about 15 hours LAX to Munich. Also did LAX to Zurich, about the same. I pop a sleeping pill at the beginning, helps make it go by faster.

Longest flight ever was about 21 hours on a C-17 from Anchorage to Thailand, which ended with an airborne assault on an airfield. That was a looooong fucking flight.

Along those lines... probably the time the engine stumbled at night.  Only about 10 minutes away from the field, but still... fuck that.

No water was found in the sumps before or after the flight, and no issues with the fuel system were found.

I was about 17 at the time and didn't think twice about it.  Now?  Fuck that single engine night shit.

Last time I was on a South Africa 747 there was a riot in the middle of the Ocean. A bunch of kids were going home to Cape Verde, got on the plane drunk, and the SA staff kept selling them booze. Then they opened up the duty free on the 2nd floor of the plane and these kids came skipping down with bottles of booze they started drinking from. THEN a stew catches one smoking in the john and the Capt. of this thing comes back and starts MF'ing them all and before you know it there was a shoving match at 30,000'.

And there I was in the middle of it, naturally they put me in the same section as these twats. The cops were waiting at Cape Verde for them and we went on to J-berg. My longest was probably in a C-5 from Turkey to Dover flying against the jet stream. Had to be 16 hours. These new triple 7's can fly about 18 hours and reach about anywheres non-stop.

Johannesburg to Atlanta. I think it was like 16 or 17 hours. I was stuck in between two guys that didn't fit into their seats.

Longest total trip was Kansas City to Llongwe, Malawi. 24 total hours in the air. 48 hours travel time including layovers. KC-MInneapolis-Heathrow-Addis Abba-Llongwe. Only thing that was cool was I got to ride on a 787 on the return trip.

My longest was childs play compared to some of these, 7 hours Paris to DC.  Still felt like hell.

My wife and her dad just did a trip to SE Asia though, JFK to Taipei and then all manner of connections from there.  She was either on a plane or running to one for 24 hours on either end of that mess.

Probably doesn't count, but when I went to catch my last ship in the Navy, I had to go from Gulfport, MS to Singpore.

Gulfport -> Nashville -> Seattle (or Portland can't recall which) -> Tokyo -> Singapore

I think it was 24 hours total travel time. I was a zombie when I got there. I almost cried when we took off from Tokyo and the stewardess said it was 8 hours flight time. I think I just started pounding beers until I could sleep. That was early 1990.

My Dad flew home from Korea in a C-119 in ~1953 or 54. It was his first time flying too. I wish I'd asked him how many stops. He told me he was grateful he didn't have to come home by ship.
