I just got this back from Magnaport.  It is a 629-1, made in in 1985.  I bought it off GB, and when I got it, somebody had buggered up the back corner of the square butt frame with a file and it had someone's SSN and DOB engraved under the grips.  I negotiated with the seller, so went me a check for the difference in condition from the GB pics.  No issue there.  He was also willing to take it back, but I decided to keep it as a project.  So, I sent the revolver to Magnaport.  They had it about two months.  The result is awesome.

I had the following work done:
Round-butt conversion.  It now takes K-frame round butt grips.
Remove old personal markings from frame.
Install ports.
Bead blast finish.

I just installed a set of micarta grips from VZ grips.
I also obtained a Matt Delfatti holster in NWOT condition from ebay.

Here is the result. It will be carried.  Oh yes, it will be carried.

When you are shooting 44 Magnum, it is going to have a lot of flash anyway, so why not?

I have a 6-1/2 629-4, and it is definitely my best...

Have you considered what that will do to your ears when fired sans earpro? Some say auditory exclusion kicks in a SD situation, but I don't know...

Because I've fired enough .44 magnum reloads (aka "elephant loads") to know how bad the percussion is. That revolver with stout loads would be a mother fucker.

I have a 629-6, that I have been shooting since 2004, so I have loads worked up.  My standard full house load is a 240 grain Hornady XTP over 20.0 grains of 2400.  I ran two cylinders of those through it today with no ill effects.  I also shot a box of my plinking loads, 240 grain Berry's plated bullet over 7.6 grains of Unique.

The bead blast is nice.

I prefer full underlug but that is gorgeous.

I would not like the VZ grips on a 44. I am not recoil shy and those just aren't that pleasant. Great with light loads or a smaller caliber, though.

For shorter barrel 44s that I shoot a lot, I like the x frame style grips that enclose the back.

That wasn't an option.  The square butt was messed up, and in doing the conversion there is not enough material to make it properly it an N frame round butt, or so I am told.

Very purty.

Honestly tho I wish they still made a Blue Steel 3" M-29. As purty as that is there seems to be less and less Blue'd wheel guns around and it kinda bothers me.

Definitely stay with the N frame, but I can't stand the round butt look or feel (except on a J frame snubbie.)

Speaking of revolver perfection, just snagged one of my grail S&W wheel guns a couple nights ago.

629-4 4" Mountain Gun, unfluted cylinder, Altamont grips with the original Hogues included. I saw it on the shelf and my eyes got big as dinner plates. They'd just put it out, sometimes it pays to hit the LGS often.

I must admit those are damn sharp. I've looked at them before and damn near walked out with one. But my 327NG 8 shot cured that itch.

There was a ported 6" 629-4 Classic just like yours (looks like yours is a -5?) at a pawnshop here. In a feigned moment of financial responsibility I passed it up because I already have a -4 5" Classic that gives me major wood.

It sold and now I kinda regret not buying it.

Forgive the ignorant question, but why is the front sight blade so high on the guns pictured?
It would seem that lining up the front sight, you'd be pointing the muzzle down about 5*?

Nice, but I'm a fan of the old fashion S&W target stocks.

Fingergrooves on the grips makes me disperse my fingers and I keep them as close together as possible.

My 625-4 5", awaiting wooden Hogue grips. I wish the barrel wasn't ported, but I won't complain for the price I got it at. Finding replacement barrels is tough, and getting one fitted sure ain't cheap either.

I like it OP.

I have two S&W's reworked by MagnaPort. They do great work. One is a 25-2 with a full house combat conversion. Barrel cut down to 4", ported, action job, chamfered and numbered cylinders, recut forcing cone, polished hammer and trigger and matte blued. Very nice.

The other is my 28-2 that was/is a beater. The barrel was shot out so Kenny called and asked if I would like to swap the barrel out. I had a choice of either a 3 1/2" or 5" Model 27 barrels. I'm a big Skeeter fan so I opted for the 5". So now it is a blue worn 28-2 with a high polished 27 barrel. It came ported. He also did his action job, chamfered and numbered the chambers. It is my best shooting revolver I have.

My dad carries a 3" SP-101 that has had the MagnaPort touch. Action job, bobbed hammer and quadra ported. It is a little beast!

I have  Model 19 that I want them to cut down to 3", round butt and a full house action job. I would go polished blue with matte flats and flutes on that one.

MagnaPort does awesome work.

If you load it with .44 specials, it is a lot like carrying a .45 ACP.  It gives you tremendous flexibility of loads.  A 240 grain Hornady XTP moving at 1300 fps is bad medicine.  If you roll your own, it is as cheap as anything else to shoot.  Plus it it awesome.
