[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Favorite Multitool? (Page 1 of 2)

What's everyone's favorite Multitool? I've had a SwissChamp SAK for 20 years and a Leatherman Charge TTi for around 5. I just picked up a Swisstool Spirit X and I'll be damned if it's not the perfect blend of both tools.

I have a Leatherman Sidekick in all my vehicles including my four wheeler. I think it's a good little multi-tool for the price.

| I've carried the Leatherman Micra in my pocket everyday for at least 10 years. Love it. It's small enough that I forget it's there, yet I find a way to use it almost every day. When it wears out, which is soon, I'll probably get another one. The scissors are the most handy part. |

Every "multi-tool" sucks.
Every one of them. You squeeze the pliers hard, they break. You pry anything with the knife-blade, they break. The screwdrivers can't reach anything except maybe the face-plate for the switch in the bathroom. I carry a pair of real VISE-GRIP needle-nose pliers, and a real knife in my range bag. If I have to change a car battery, or a muffler, a multi-tool is nearly useless. I have a useful tool kit in the car. |

Gerber. All the tools are on the inside so when you have to monkey grip it, you don't have multiple sharp edges gouging painfully into your palm.
Also, the Gerber seems to have sharper, crisper edges on their tools than Leatherman which seems to go for the sleek, polished look. Also, Gerber doesn't funnel funds to libtards and brag about it...

I keep a Gerber 400 in my work bag. Stays in my work truck or personal truck.
I like it alright. Also have a Leatherman Skeletool that's been used around the house some. All multi tools are a compromise and if I am close enough for real pliers or screwdrivers that's what I use. But in a pinch to do something without hunting down the dedicated tool, they'll do. Last use of the old Gerber was pulling a nail out so I could plug a tire at work. And cutting open a wrapped up set of plans. I've started carrying my old Buck 110 on my belt - I just like the knife - and a small SAK classic in my pocket. That'll cover most things for me except pliers. |
|
I always carry a Leatherman Super Tool 300. And as a gift for my groomsmen I gave them all Leathermans (I think they were Waves) as well. I used to have a Gerber (whichever one has the spring loaded pliers that pop out) many years ago but it fell apart on me.
In my many farming travels there hasn't been much that a Leatherman and a vise grip won't get me by (at least until I get to the right tools). Replacing drive chain, light filing of burrs if a bearing goes out in the field, jamming the pliers in to a tight spot to wedge a bolt head so I can turn the nut with the vise grip, wiring... Shit can happen and leave you in the middle of the field with typically every tool except the ones you need - lots of improvising. |

SOG powerlock series.
Carry it all day every day. I have abused the thing quite a bit. Only tool I've broken on it is the VERY tiny point on the can opener which is meant to be a jeweler size flat head. The individual tools are <$10 each if you do break them. The knife is OK, I use it as my throwaway blade that I'm ok with abusing. |

The SOG, while not as svelte as the Leatherman, is more robust and has more clamping power. YMMV |
| Leatherman Surge has been my companion for many years. Their CS is great as well. I dropped mine and messed the Scissors up. Sent it back was willing to pay to get it fixed. Replaced with new no charge. Yes I know the owner loved Bill Clinton which sucks. Mine was a gift and has been a great tool |

I've had my original Leatherman since about 1990. I have a bunch from Gerber to Leatherman to Multitasker. Some too big to carry. Some small enough for a key chain.
The deal is simple. They do nothing well. They are the master of nothing. If dedicated tools are rifles, multitools are the handgun of the firearms world. They just happen to be handy and that's about it. |

I wish they still made the Side Clip. I lost mine, but it was great to carry in a pocket. http://www.multitool.org/wiki/show_image.php?id=355 Attached File |

I keep a leatherman Crunch on my bike with appropriate bits. Its alright; locking pliers are nice to have.
I've got an old leatherman PST from the '80s I carried while enlisted, and a SOG powerlock but never EDC them. I just keep them in the kitchen drawer and truck for small tasks that can be done with shitty tools as needed. |
