No I don't mean everyone should major in music.......

But putting a clarinet in a kid's hands, showing him a page with black dots on it and telling him to make a melody out of it-----

Turns out it's better for spatial reasoning capacity than a second math requirement

So STEAM or STEMM away!

Yeah, about all those careers for people with music degrees...

The whole point of STEM is to get people to focus on degrees in science instead of the arts. Doesn't adding art kind of defeat the whole purpose?

Musical instruments have been shown to improve brain structure and form more connections between the hemispheres of the brain. So at least their reasoning is grounded in science.

I am not sure about music as I never learned a note. I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

But, I do think STEAM is a good notion. Art in other words helped me quite a lot. Engineers and physicists can benefit from better spatial insight and if nothing else a better ability to just to make simple sketches by hand.

You can still be a musician and be in a technical field of study.  As an engineering major, I was the section leader of my college trumpet section.  Those who were music majors mostly went on to do something other than music.

OP is saying music opens part of the brain.

That portion of the brain being unlocked is correlated to future STEM success.

As an aside, I know several music majors that became very successful in analytical areas.

Then they can pick up a guitar

You don't need a degree to enjoy music.
You don't need a degree to learn music.
You don't need a degree to play music.
You don't even need a degree to play music good. Just practice, determination and some talent.

In short, a degree in music isn't needed to get the benifits that being able play it can give someone.

Funny, I was talking about this last night while plucking away at the guitar.

I started playing drums in 5th grade, moved onto alto saxophone in 6th grade which ended up with me moving around and playing a variety of woodwinds and brass.  I haven't played anything since about my freshman year of high school up until the last few months when I picked up learning to play the guitar.  Playing an instrument is probably one of the best mental exercises I have ever done.

It's all a dumb attempt by various liberal arts to latch onto the economic prestige of STEM.

The liberal arts can be useful, but unfortunately the caretakers of those disciplines have wrecked the whole edifice. They're trying to move on, insert themselves into STEM, and wreck that, too.

As Iowahawk put it:

1. Identify a respected institution.
2. kill it.
3. gut it.
4. wear its carcass as a skin suit, while demanding respect.

Art/Music classes are already taken as part of general requirements for an actual STEM degree. No need to expand past that. There you go, you snowflakes got your little fagot benefit of doodling on paper and pretending it "influenced" an Engineer.

If you major in music/art, you are fucking retarded. You should never be mentioned in the same breath as STEM.

Eh.  Well rounded people lead richer lives and are more useful to society (more voters having taken Econ 101 or Logic for example).  That is the reason why the BA degree exists, but it seems lost on most in GD.

I'm not sure how that adds up to adding extraneous things to STEM though.  Not everything that makes you more well rounded has to be learned in a college classroom either.

<--- Perfect example of how small minded GD can be.  The most successful person I went to college with was an art major.  Even in college we were merciless in telling him how useless that was.  He taught himself computer programming on the side.  You will find his name as "Lead Effects Designer" on several very well known video games - including several in the Halo franchise.  The difference is between being a stupid hippie who thinks the world owes you a life because you're an "artist", and finding a way to make doing what you love useful to society.

The whole point of STEM is to encourage kids to study hard sciences. That doesn't mean everyone needs to or that those who do wouldn't benefit from some classes in liberal arts or art/music but STEAM is counter productive. If anything I'd make it STEEM with the addition of economics.

I endorse music being apart of the education curriculum over school sports.  However, both music and sports teach real life skills like working as part of a team, accountability, pulling your own weight, and it's like working overtime.

I often find myself wondering how ARFCOM would change it's oil if everyone had a STEM degree in the ARFCOM utopia.

People seriously need to stop tacking on letters on to STEM and acting like their artsy fartsy thing is just as important.

STEM was created to help people get a degree that was actually worth something so we dont have a nation of people with liberal arts degrees. Our s**ty education system combined with the influence of hollywood and the media has created a society where everyone wants to be an artist, musician, writer, dancers, etc... problem is those careers dont produce anything, they dont advance society or better the world we live in. Entertainment doesnt put a man on the moon, cure diseases or allow us to grow our population without destroying the environment.

So yeah, f**k music. and F**ck STEMM, STEAM and every other BS attempt at hijacking the STEM movement

Sorry but no.

Stem is stem for a reason.

The world would continue to turn, more boringly, without a music degree.

Human development would grind to a halt without STEM.

Thats why everyone else wants to tack their letter on to it, but their arguement always fails.

The arts are an expression of culture and their advancement advances society and culture.

That doesn't mean we should be paying for people to study the arts so they can muddle through life. The problem isn't that the arts are worthless it's that many students of the arts are worthless.
