Should I be using some kind of a VPN or proxy for the internet?

Any suggestions for good ones?

I run malwarebytes & adblocker & really haven't had much trouble to speak of, but I try to avoid click-bait type sites.

I have noticed firefox seems to be extremely slow to start & amazon seems to load a lot slower.  I started noticing that after the last firefox update.

I recently upgraded from an N router to an AC router.  While I was looking at some of the logs from the N router there seemed to be a lot of Denial of Service stuff.  Haven't noticed that with the new router yet.  Also the new router had a section for setting up a VPN.

Just wondering if I should be doing something to better protect myself?

Operas free browser has a built in VPN,  which is probably just a proxy but it's an interesting product.  I'm sure it's actually horrible but who knows.

Its both and good enough to get around content filters and geographical restrictions.

OP you want both.

ETA-  Let me rephrase that-  You want the capabilities of both "on tap".

I would think twice about running Opera now that the company is owned by Qihoo of China.

For regular browsing? I wouldn't worry about it. I'm an IT professional, and I run Windows on my home PC and laptop, and don't even have AV software installed.

Think of your computer as your internet penis. Don't stick your internet penis in questionable sites, and you won't get viruses.

How does one create such VPN?

VPN to where, work, certain sites, etc.  Many VPNs have split tunnels, the other end needs to have VPN sw running, otherwise the request goes out your normal Internet connection.

A VPN or proxy won't protect you from malware

What would be a better option?

Neither are likely to help much with protecting you from viruses/malware or speed.

Use Chrome if you don't mind Google. Try using OpenDNS to avoid malware.

Sometimes my penis gets drunk & goes places it wouldn't normally go.

The last couple close calls I've had have been clicking on links people put up on here.  Now I understand why so many people don't actually go read the story/watch the video on a link.

Is chrome really any safer than waterfox/firefox?  I try to avoid using google if at all possible, but that's mainly because I don't agree with their politics.

Just use tor for everything, it's not perfect but it is free.

Always open questionable links in incognito mode.  Plugins locked down by default and browser can't write data to disk.

Why not just use a Virtual Machine or a OS such as Linux if you are worried so much about Virus/malware and inability to control it on your machine?

Look at the Brave browser.  Tor is alright, but you must remember that exit nodes could be compromised.  A paid for VPN isn't a bad thing to have access to.  Neither Tor nor VPN will protect you from malicious code or websites.

I have PIA and like it. It is easy to setup and use.

Until now I had it on my PCs only. I left it off my router because my telescreen wouldn't play the Netflix.
