I'm probably the last person to figure this out, but it seemed noteworthy. You know those free flashlights you an get from places like Harbor Freight? I was playing around with one while I was bored on the phone with someone and discovered that they fit rather nicely in a 1-inch scope ring. So I mounted that ring on the front rail of my defense shotgun and...well. it actually held through several mag tubes of 00 buck. I have since put my real light back on, but heck, in a pinch I'd probably use it.

In terms of the light quality, I would say it's certainly better than NOT having a light. :)

Anyway, just had a to share, maybe this fact is unknown/useful for someone.

You should get a hold of the guy who bought $100 worth of scopes for 3 guns in the other thread.

Were you still bored on the phone when you put several tubes of 00 buck through it?

That would have been a cool phone conversation.

Those are about the sorriest lights in the world, and are only marginally better than total blindness. Now, the little multi-LED worklight thingies are actually not too bad. But they won't fit in 1" rings.

Do what you gotta do, if you don't have a lot of coin to spend on lights and mounts this an option.

My way of thinking is if you are on a budget the lions share should be spent on a quality firearm then ammo then a decent holster (if it's a CCW pistol) then range time.

If it's an HD long gun then skip the holster and get the range time.

After that save for a quality light but, if you know you can't afford a good light no matter what then your idea would work. Like you said it is better then no light. And, to the people that say a cheap light is not better then no light you are wrong because if a cheap light fails you only go back to no light, the place you started.

Some people are on a strict budget (or cheap ) and lets be honest we really don't "need' a lot of the stuff we buy.

Maybe that would be a good way to travel with extra ammo? "No sir, you're fine...we don't need to search your...uhh...stuff..."

Solid points man. Literally though, I was just fidgeting with stuff on my desk at home with no outcome in mind. My HD Shotgun is the only thing I had handy AND had a forward rail, so that's where it went.

Any reason is a good reason. :) $5 worth of flashlights in stock seems as good as any.

I have a bunch of these around the house in various places. I like having lots of cheap little flashlights everywhere. (I own good ones as well) but I do not think I would put these on a rifle.

I have a lot of those lights and they usually don't survive the first drop to the floor.

OP is fake news.

Yeah, that's what I do with them.
Actually, I just checked and they do fit in a 1" mount if you grab it by the bezel, the flashlight body is just a bit undersized to fit.
Still, I probably wouldn't mount one on my weapon - I most certainly would handhold it in an emergency though.
