A woman at work went to her father's funeral a couple months ago. She just got the flag that was drapped on his coffin, and folded at the burial.

It was given to his wife, who died a few weeks later. Her son, in complete disrespect, got the flag dirty. I'm told it looks like bits of mud, and food.

I say dont unfold it, spot clean it as is.

your opinions or guidance ?

If it can be spot-cleaned, then do it.

If not... which is worse?

- unfolding the flag, washing it on gentle, and refolding it respectfully
- a half-assed spot cleaning

I would wash it, then lay a towel over it and iron the wrinkles out, then refold.  Plenty of videos on folding

There is really no guidance.
But as said above, respect is the key word.  Hell, you could run it through he washing machine and it's ok.

We retire hundreds of flags every year at the VFW.  By that i mean we burn them.
Ironic that the same respectful ceremony we use, is the same disrespectful one assholes use.

The kid needs to be kicked in the ass.

My Grandfather's flag resides in his WWII footlocker with his uniform and bring back items.
