I'm looking to get the empire strikes back and return of the Jedi on DVD, but before the terrible remaster versions.
Are they available? What do the inserts look like? I know the remaster ones have silver or gold trim. I just don't want the changed ewok song that was in the new versions. |

Yes, they are available. They came out back about 2006 time frame. I bought all three off eBay. They are out there, but they are not cheap. Anywhere from $35 -$100 each.Â
Make sure you don't buy anything but Zone 1 because there are European and Asian ones out there which will not work on your DVD player. Search for "Star Wars Theatrical Version DVD" |

The Original Trilogy released for Blue Ray and DVD are all the Special Edition with the CGI adds and all. I believe the last time it was released in the original theatrical versions without the computer graphics were on VHS. These ones, if I remember correctly... https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61Qa4TlSdwL._SY445_.jpg I do keep hearing rumors from time to time that Disney might release the original footage, but I haven't seen anything concrete yet.

I think the only option for pre-remastered is on VHS. ![]() You are incorrect. ETA: Have the wrong link, BRB. ETA#2 SW Original Version |

They also released "Special Edition" DVDs that had the original unaltered movies as special features on them. I have those.
The problem with them is that the original unaltered movies are considered to be "tack on" items and they are in permanent letterbox 4:3 aspect ratio with shitty audio encoding (meaning if you viewed them on a HDTV there is a black border all around the low def movie, top bottom left and right as it is a letterboxed 4:3 image). |

Technically those aren't the original theatrically version. They fixed some things digitally but they don't have the extra scenes. They're as close as your going to get. IIRC they have been released on DVD. I think they're the version used on the sets mentioned already. |

I didn't know that. I did hear that some entrepreneur was going through and reconstructing the despecialized edition for DVD, but that it wasn't officially licensed by Fox. More of a bootleg sort of thing, but just cleaned up. Is that what you got? Quoted:

Yeah, I have these. There's a problem with the originals. They're non-anamorphic widescreen, so guess what, when you play the DVD on your fancy HDTV, it's going to be windowboxed. Meaning it's going to have black bars on top and sides. You can maybe use your TV to zoom, and make the picture fill the whole screen, but it's basically VHS quality. Woohoo. I haven't watched the theatrical versions in a long time, because the only version available looks like shit on an HDTV. |
