Monoprice has 25% off ending tonight so I'm putting in a large order.

Home network question.

Finishing our basement.

I have my main (only) router upstairs in kitchen.

I have a line ran from it (kitchen router) to our basement.  That line terminates in my media closet where I'd like to add another... (NEED HELP HERE-ROUTER???)

Am I looking to add another ROUTER?  I have tons of cat5 the home builder left me so I ran additional lines from the media closet to all the other basement rooms.   I wish to hook all those lines into a (ROUTER?) in my media closet for a hard line connection instead of wireless.

I don't need a SWITCH do I?

Obviously a novice here guys.  Please help. My question is, is a router the right hardware piece I'm looking for?

Not looking for something I have to configure-just looking to hook into my main router.

BONUS POINTS if you give me advice on which router to go with.

Thanks a lot.

switch
run a cat5 between one of the ports on it and one of the ports on the router, devices off the other ports
I'd go with at least a gigabit, unmanaged gigabit switches are fairly cheap. that will be more than your internet connection will need but will helpful if you do any file transfers between devices

My cable modem is upstairs connected to my router, I have a 4 port switch connected to the router, main pc connected to that switch, second cable goes from that switch down to the basement to a second switch that I have a file server connected to and my home theater pc on the main floor.

Thank you for your help sir.

Would a 2nd router configured as SLAVE also allow me amplified wireless access in the basement ALONG WITH those hard wired connections?

Thanks again

You need a switch.  One router is all you need from what I gathered from your post. Have fun!
