I watched Deep Web this morning and found it very interesting. Didn't realize how much was out there.
It was about Ross Ulbricht and his online name, Dead Pirate Roberts, the creator of The Silk Road. Basically an Amazon shopping site for illegal goods. Just thought I would share for anyone that wanted to burn 90 minutes. |
|
i was given an old wired magazine and they had a 2 part series on dread pirate roberts and silk road.
My copy has 1st half. Was pretty well done in my opinion. I have the documentary written down on a list of stuff to watch, basically when bored I pull out the list and see what interests me. I find this stuff interesting but won't ever be playing on the deep web. I did enjoy some of the threads on stuff especially where some guy was playing on it and then the deep web someone turned on the newb's laptop camera so they could watch the newb. |

It was a fantastic documentary . I clearly did not approve of his activities , but the reason he got arrested and prosecuted had everything to do with shitty persec and opsec. He was almost asking to get arrested . I agree. It did seem like at the end he wanted to take the fall as being the sole person being responsible for SR. I could be totally wrong here, but I just get that feeling. The whole 4th amendment issue was quite a twist. Being distracted so the agents could slip a drive into his laptop before he could encrypt it was pretty shady. |

Other than the (alleged) "murder for hire" stuff, what did he do illegally? Did he advertise the site as being made for illegally selling stuff? Or does the act of creating the marketplace for the illegal activity warrant the indictment in and of itself? |

You're way late to the party pal. Several arfcom members were on Silk Road. You got it all wrong...pal is off today. I'm Buddy and Chief works Friday. I wasn't looking for a party. Just thought I would post about the documentary since I know lots of members like this stuff. |

It really looks like he was screwed at his trial. The govt wanted a head and Ulbricht was it. |

Is that the new illegal marketplace or something, I imagine? Quoted:

One of them. I've always wanted to use one of those sites, but I never will. I just have a curiosity to find out if it's a giant scam, or i it's actually a real deal functional black market. I can't accept the possible consequences, and no one would believe (for any illicit purchase) "I just wanted to see if this place was legit." The idea is very interesting to me. Wonder if any of it is actually legitimate business. |

Haven't watched it but
agree re current status of Silk Road Silk Road was yet another e-commerce site but with a couple differences: - situated in Deep Web (see TOR) for personal privacy - Bitcoin-based - escrow service that didn't release funds from seller to buyer until seller said so Now, whatever that site was used for is another matter. But those features above were steps forward for the consumer business model. |

So these sites actually deliver on stuff? I figured at least 50% would be a scam. How can you trust the escrow? If everything's anonymous, shams and cheats must get away with it really easy. |

The article states that the US Govt created "tor" (whatever the fuck that is). Some way to access some alternate internet apparently.
Anyway, wouldn't that be entrapment? They create a means by which you can do something illegal then arrest you for it? (sounds kind of like what happened to this pirate guy eh?) |

There are also a ton of carders' marketplaces that sell CC info, people's identities, etc. Those however, can be full of scammers scamming scammers. |
| On a similarly related note, read up on Open Bazaar which is a block chain based ecommerce solution on the regular old internets. Interestingly enough the community does not prohibit the sale of anything, BUT IP addresses are logged so there is that. Still its a fascinating case study for the utility of block chain powered applications. |

I gotta run momentarily, but I'll be back later. To buy something, the amount is transferred for the buyer's account to the site before the order is transmitted to the seller. When the buyer receives whatever they ordered, they go in and okay the release of the funds, which the site transfers to the buyer's account. So the reputation of the site itself is in play, and their business model is to transact both ways, taking a small fee. That's a cash cow, and they zealously defend their own reputation. Forums exist to rate vendors or to share experience among buyers. New sellers have a reputation to establish. Do scams exist. Sure do. |

This stuff interests me too but I don't have the balls to go explore I've poked around using Tor to a few sites, like the Hidden Wiki, but I'm worried about it too. You'll see plenty of stuff to click on that you know damn well you don't want to click on. Just descriptions of websites in some links have bothered me. |
