I stumbled across a few of the videos of the Camel Trophy "races" on Youtube. Holy Cow, those races looked like a lot of fun! Lots of Land Cruiser porn...I love the Defender 110 (I think that's what they were).

1996

1989

Wikipedia says they quit because Camel was sold to a Japanese tobacco company who no longer wanted to sponsor it.

Is there anything similar currently? Anybody participate in something similar?

As I am looking at Dakar stuff I am finding old footage as well. Motorcycles on zip lines being moved across gorges, mud up to the hood, crazy stuff. We need more of this in the world.

They made a movie about it.

OK.  Not really.  But when I see jungle offroad stuff, it reminds me of Sorcerer.

My poor grades in high school can be partially attributed to spending study halls reading about the Camel Trophy in Four Wheeler Magazine.

I saw some of the Discos and Defenders in Belize for the 1995 Mundo Maya.

Those are not Land CRUISERS, those are Land ROVERS. Big difference.

Id like to see some bro dozers with a 12" lift and low profile mud terrains do this stuff. lol

Ooops. You are right, of course. I know the difference, I just mis-typed.

Land Cruisers are pretty awesome, too. I'd actually rather have a Land Cruiser than a Land Rover. On my bucket list!

Thanks for the tip on the Dakar (Though I thought they quit running that due to terrorism?) and the Rain Forrest challenge. I admit I like the cooperative aspect of the Camel Trophy a lot.

Camel Trophy was awesome when it was about the trip. Then it became more about tests and tasks and not much driving. Stupid.

You clearly don't know anything about overlanding.

That's why I already posted about bro dozers and low profile mud terrains. The fact that these trucks are nearly stock should tell anyone thats serious about overlanding/off roading you don't need a bro lift/50" tires. Only in the US does one need an F250 lariat and 12" lift to get to the mall. lol every time

I thought it was cool that the Brits and the Japanese (and maybe a few others) had right hand drive vehicles, and the US, Germany, had left hand drive.

In one of the early seasons they talked about that. The powers that be decided it would be safer (clearance issues) and fair if they did it that way.

They're actually trying to get from point A to B, not just fuck around in uncle Billy-Bob's back field.
