I've done fine over the past 7 years with just a cheap tent bought on sale for about $40 at the local sporting goods store in Cedar City, Utah.  YMMV.

This. Can't remember the model. But they have the lightest 2 person 3 season that is a real tent.

Hammock?  Or maybe tarp if you really want to go lightweight.

Your comfort level at the end of the day is almost inverse to your comfort level walking, but I am sure you know that.

I like MSR, but any mentioned are good brands.  Weight/comfort is what it comes down to.

Big Agnes UL3.  If you need it for two people get a 3 person.  If just for one get a 2 person.

Kifaru Sawtooth if you need a 4 season tent which can be heated.

Beat by 3 minutes.

Hmm maybe not a typical lightweight BACKPACKING tent (which is more like a tarp for the hardcore guys), but lightweight hunting tent...yes sir!

Bad ass.  Link please.

I have a nice hammock I use sometimes. As comfortable as they are, I tend to not sleep well in them.

Basically what everyone else is saying. I mostly use a hammock system, but I recently scored a snugpack bunker for dirt cheap. It's heavy but is a great 4 season for 2 people.

Is this just for you or are you taking entertainment?  That matters as well.  Of course I have a two person tent I backpack with because I can sprawl out and have room for all my shit as well.

REI Quarter Dome 3 tent is what you seek. Best value for a lighter weight backpacking tent.

I've owned several brands over the past 20 years. This is the best bet for the money in my opinion.

If you're looking for more lightweight, like half the weight of the Sawtooth, look at the Kifaru Supertarp.

The black diamond megalight is what you seek. Buy the fly to go with it. Very light and durable. Used by the National Outdoor Leadership School all over the world.

I've had one for years. Never had an issue. Insanely light and easy to use/set up. Single pole design is flawless.

Can't beat the Rei prices. My quarter dome one is a solid tent a fraction of some of the competitor prices. I've also got a 2 person half dome 2 plus.

Build quality is great on both.

Actually, after looking through the website it is really quite lightweight for the durability-and being a 4 season.

I must add this to my prep/hunt wishlist.

I have been in the market for a basecamp 4 season like this.  Cabela's outfitters tents have caught my eye, but they were just too heavy.
I don't know how I missed this one.  Thanks!

Kifaru Makes killer shit. I'd love to own their tents/stove s

I never sleep in tents though. I use a 10x12 syny tarp to sub zero temps for weeks on end.

If I had to I  do have a REI tent that doesn't have a floor and is very light.

Be warned, it's hellishly expensive, but I've camped in some extreme conditions in it, in comfort.

You don't say where you are but if you are anywhere there are biting insects you probably want netting.  I love hammock and tarp camping but when bugs are about I want bug netting.  Some ultralight tents and tarp style tents don't have bug netting so you either limit airflow by closing it up, you carry netting (adding weight back to your setup) or you get bit.  Most bug sprays are not good for sleeping bags so I don't like spraying myself down before going to sleep.

My four season tent is an old North Face Aerohead, my three season is an REI Half Dome 2 Plus (I bought it primarily for motorcycle touring but have carried it as well).  The REI replaced a damaged TNF Bullfrog.  I've also got an ENO hammock setup.

It's a fantastic way to travel light, dry out your gear and stay warm in the backcountry. Listed in Kifaru's catalog, or there are others like Seek Outside that offer other similar sized stoves.

Bought an REI Half Dome 2 tent for $139 just 2 years ago. They are $199 now.

I got rid of my Tarptent. Loved the concept but the damn thing was clammy as hell and I couldn't get the condensation to stop no matter how I pitched it.

I really like the BA copper spur, either the 1 or 2. I have both and they're fine, Light weight tents. Also have the Nemo Hornet 2P which I also really like. It comes in at about 2 lbs IIRC. Also like the Z Packs cuben soloplex tent. Lived in that for about 3 weeks. Little tight but is it ever lightweight.

Also look around here for ideas Whiteblaze

For a good budget choice I'd get the Sierra Designs High Route tent designed by Andrew Skurka.  If you don't know who he is, look him up.  Great info on his website and Youtube.

If money is not an issue, I love my Z-Packs Duplex.

I have a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 that I've used the most.  It is a good tent, but I like not packing poles (the High Route and Z-Packs use trekking poles), I always worry about the tent poles getting bent or poking into other gear.  Also, the thin material of the floor tears easily.  I never pitched it without a footprint, and never pitched it over a bunch of sticks, but still got a few tears.  I'd make my own Tyvek footprint if I use that tent again.

I agree. The quarter and half Domes from REI have always have great ratings and I see tons of them out on the trails al over.

There's lighter, there's better, but it's always a god place to start.

I picked up a Sierra Design Flashlight 2.  Haven't got it out yet, but have set it up a few times in the backyard.  Mixes a single and double wall and seems to have enough ventilation to prevent to much condensation.  Isn't freestanding so it has to be staked out though.

We have been very pleased with our Marmot Astral 2P.  Got a steal on it a couple of years ago on Sierra Trading post.

It has many nights on the AT and several nights in the Carson National Forest in NM including some pretty rough summer storms.

If you aren't concerned about every last ounce, I recommend a Marmot Tungsten.  They make 1 person up to a 4 person so pick your flavor.  I've been all over the Rockies the last 2 years with a 3p or 4p.  Plenty of room, nice vestibules, durable (I backpack with 2 dogs and no damage) and relatively light.

Another vote for the REI Quarter Dome.  I have a QD3 and it's perfect for 2 people and some gear.
