| There's a courtier with a tactical codpiece in Act II, Scene II of John Webster's play The Duchess of Malfi (1612). It's a gun smuggles in his codpiece. It's played up for laughs, but is also a commentary of the Duchess' character as a widow. Widos were seen as being more sexually active and wanton, presumably because they had sex while married and now that they are alone, they just plain want it and are willing to get it outside of marriage. Such was he mindset of the Renaissance. |
