beijing-smog-pollution-red-alert
"Beijing authorities have declared a five-day pollution “red alert”, shutting schools, ordering thousands of vehicles off the roads and telling residents to stay indoors, after the Chinese capital was enveloped by a shroud of toxic smog that is expected to linger until Wednesday."

We're every bit as much to blame for global warming now as we were for global cooling in the 70's.

It is a shame that any and all discussions about any potential remedy to so-called man made climate change do not include, as the very first step, that China and India, etc. must first conform to western environmental standards.

I know right.  The global warming is melting the glaciers revealing vegetation that has been buried under snow and ice for thousands of years!  Um wait a minute, if there is thousands of year old vegetation under the snow/ice then that means the earth was even warming than it is now and it was warm enough for a long enough period that vegetation could grow.  That means the man is really responsible for Global Cooling and we still haven't warmed the earth back up yet!

The climate has always changed and will always changed.  Only man is dumb enough to think they can control it, especially when they can't even predict rain, snow, hurricanes, or tornadoes accurately.

This is why shit like what California does cracks me up. They can ban any and everything, and won't make in a dent in what China and India alone do.  But let's put all the dairy farmers out of business, you betcha.

Ya no thanks I like my clean air.

Catalytic converter would do wonders for the air over there. The population of Los Angeles has grown since the 70's and 80's  but the air is cleaner now than when I was a kid. They used to force us to stay inside on certain days. The smog was so bad that sometimes the sky was bright orange and the shadows were deep blue.

You do know that LA was pretty bad in the past and even now it still has smog? I was standing on the Huntington Beach pier a few years ago and you could SEE the boundary between the brown air and the sea air.

Unfortunately to address the issues in the major cities they've had to impact all areas.

Inversion layers and areas that are known for them shouldn't screw over every other state and their people because of their own  local weather phenomenons.

Hey, "it's their turn to pollute." Despite the fact that China and India could have industrialized with current technology, instead western corporations have exported decades old tech and factories and brought them online in China. Just one example, it was stated on NPR around 10 years ago that VW had exported the tooling from the mid-80s and they were producing cars in China from that era and emissions standards.

Absolutely.  It's always seems to be the American white middle-class taxpayer's fault.  If we drop our pop can in the wrong bucket, we're scorned and chastised.  In the City of Seattle, you might even get a fine.

But Victoria, BC can pump quadrillions of gallons of raw shit directly into the Strait of Juan de Fuca every day, as they have since day 1, and nobody says a word.

Who knows what kind of horrible stuff China is pumping into the oceans.

I just checked the US embassy air quality monitor for Beijing.

The current PM2.5 is at 307 AQI which translates to 256.6 ug/m3, which is REALLY bad.

For comparison, in the US a regulatory exceedance day for PM2.5 is 35.5 ug/m3.
12/17/2016 7:01:56 PM EDT
[#30]
There's a 526 AQI for PM2.5 right outside Beijing the US AQI calculations don't take into account any values over 500, which is over 500 ug/m3.

Pretty much you breathe that air and you are reducing your lifespan.

Pollution does not equal global warming.

Keeping pollution at a decent level via modest, thought out, evenly applied clean air regulations is one thing.
Driving businesses under and enacting draconian taxation/wealth redistribution under the guise of saving us from some bullshit that the left concocted is a different animal.

I say we let them keep on poisoning themselves.
