Someone mentioned the Kodi android box in another thread. Didn't want to hijack that thread. What can you tell me about this?

Reading through the amazon Q&A now.

I'm trying to decide between a kodi or roku for my mother in law. She's not computer savvy so that's the only reason I'm leaning towards the roku. Anyone with a kodi that can tell me if it's easy enough for a old person to use?

The Amazon Fire TV and FireStick's are super popular.

You turn your Firestick/Fire TV into a live streaming box. You install and app, and it runs from the Amazon interface.  From that, you open individual channels that people have setup to share/stream TV and Movies.

I installed it in about 6 minutes, and was watching a movie in about 12 after getting the channels setup. My wife is not PC savvy and we showed her twice. She's a pro now in launching, selecting and watching.

Get her a Roku.
The Kodi units are still on the "bleeding edge" and are finicky to use.  They frequently hang when streaming.

Kodi is bad to choke on .mkv files.

Not all of them.  Just the ones you want to watch.

Or a firestick and load Kodi on it.
That gives you the option of Amazon Streaming, Netflix, and other sites.
You can also use Kodi but be aware Kodi is a "gray" area
Really depends on what you want to do with it

Get a Roku or FireStick as they are authorized by the big streamers to receive 1080p and 4k streams.

I put openelec/Kodi on a raspberry pi 3b.  Works great with streaming as it's got more CPU power than a firestick and such so I've yet to see it choke on anything.  Bonus is that it's a raspberry pi, so you can just boot different things on it.  I run a dual boot retropie/openelec setup.  Works great!   Just make sure you look into a VPN setup if you are umm.....streaming some sources.   There are some VPN addons for openelec/kodi.

Exactly what Lurch said, Android boxes are a GIANT PITA unless you are someone who wants constantly deal with issues. Amazon Fire products and Roku are rock solid.

a good setup if you are OK with refreshing the programming ever so often, or if you have teenagers who can do it in their sleep.  but like every other good thing, sooner or later someone comes along and puts a stop to it.

I just built a Pi retro gaming box this last weekend.  With any Pi thing, if there are good instructions online, you can make anything.

Not sure on Roku but on firestick it seems limitless....  Even down to specific sports games.

I have Gary3dfx thingy installed in one and some other fuckers thing in another.   They both work similar and use the same apps.

What do you mean? Something more on the up and up than kodi?
Yeah Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, SlingTv, PlaystationTv, YouTube,HBO Now. etc etc

Kodi can stream movies that you have bought and saved to a hard drive but I'd wager most people use it in a "gray" manner
There are even sites you can pay a sub to that get you live tv and the channels are guaranteed to be up using kodi..
