Got a new phone, 2gb data plan. pretty sure i wont hit 2gb, but want to make settings so it doesnt download stuff automatically when i'm on mobile network. What can i do to make sure i dont waste my data ?

a few things i have done so far:
- disable account sync (google, dropbox, etc..)
-google play - only update over wifi
-google drive - only backup on wifi
-enable chrome data saver

Anything else?

Unless you get ASS TONS of emails with attachments and shit, turning off sync won't save much. Streaming shit like video can eat a lot of bandwidth. Audio isn't too bad. Try to use WiFi was much as you can, that'll save you a ton. I usually get by using about 250MB worth of data a month since I'm on WiFi at home and at work. I don't stream anything. I've also set the various apps (like Google Photos) to only back up over WiFi.

Do remove any apps you don't use. Some can download their own updates and content and shit. Keep your device clean.

Check in the settings, there's a bandwidth usage section that you can set to reset on the start of your monthly billing cycle. I'd suggest leaving some shit enabled for a few days to see what data usage is like, then decide if you want to disable shit.

If you want to get really technical, buy an app called Tasker. You can then set it up to enable and disable auto sync based on conditions (like being or not being connected to WiFi, even specific networks). It can get pretty advanced, and it's a cool app. I use the shit out of it to control settings on my phone, and to interact with my Home Automation stuff. Tasker makes a smartphone into a SMART phone!

Remove the facebook app.  Don't turn it off, remove it entirely.  I had to analyze me and my wife's phones and data usage to figure out how in the hell we went from 4 to 12 gigs per month.  Turns out the facebook app was constantly drawing data even when I was not using it.

Change all your podcast and music apps to only download over wifi.  Half of our data usage was my wife downloading multiple SoundCloud podcasts every day over the 4g network.  Thanks, Glenn Beck!

I dis able data when not in use so nothing is running that I dont know about. At bedtime it gets turned off.

Gps location will eat up some data, it is turned off.

Go to settings and hit apps, from there you can see apps running and that will give you an idea of stuff running that you were unaware of, now go to all apps and force stop or remove the bad app.

I force close apps until needed.

Google play settings and dont allow automatic updates.. Update manually when and what you want.

Suprised me how much extra data was used allowing third party cookies. Atleast thats what I think was using it up. So it got turnred
off.
As stated above a software to see and stop running tasks can be helpful.
