We have an angel tree at work for kids who are living in a group home. This year I picked a 7 yr old boy who wants an RC race car. I used to love RC cars as a kid and most of the ones I had were cheap crap ones that broke, so I want to get him something that won't break easily. I've looked around but most everything under $100 (that's my budget) are "toys", i.e. cheap crap.
Is there something out there that is already built, durable, and not a toy, for under $100. Ideally I'd like to get him a second battery as well. thanks for any help! |

This is bit over budget but about the cheapest you can go and not get junk these days. This will last him many years of fun.

When I was kid you could get a decent RC car for $60 bucks now everything cheap is junk. Same with bikes a Huffy from Kmart for $100 would last many years now, your lucky if it lasts the summer. |

100 bucks doesn't even get you a good empty starter box....... I got 2k in one RC. It's not a cheap hobby Well he is seven. He's not looking for a hobby, he wants a toy. I think what OP is asking for is a decent quality toy. Let's be careful of our tendency towards elitism. I had some regular toy RC car when I was a kid (90's) that was under $100 and lasted just fine. |

You can find one of these for under $100. There are knockoffs that still use the same parts too. Go to a hobby store and look around.
For a quality 10th scale you'll be in the $300 range. |

One more option closer to your target $130. These are 1/16 scale so a bit on the small side, but probably still a blast.

Yeah, im not looking to get him a legit rc car to go compete with, just something that would be better than a toy store rc car, but durable and ~$100. I found this this. Good reviews. Also, katrina24, what gears would be plastic in that stock setup that I could replace with metal from here? I would hate for him to strip out the plastic gears day 1. This sucks, I know from experience. |

if you buy a kid a RC car/truck that uses AA batteries.............. you better figure in the cost of an extra 48+ batteries. they will go through them very very quickly, and if the kid cant to buy more he now has a static display.
edited to add......better to get him a rtr tamiya. (find one with better shipping) tamiya

Good for you OP
This arrma truck is over budget But they have some good coupon deals going now. I got it for my kids to play around with in the yard and it takes a beating |
|
Also here's a great ready to run basher with everything included
There's coupon codes for that site as well |
|
Look up Redcat.
They are a chinese company. They aren't Traxxas or Losi. But I have several for bashing. They are good. You can bash the hell out of them. You can get spare parts if they break. They are $100-$150 (the cheaper ones). And you can upgrade them if you want. My kids and I beat the shit out of them, and they beg for more. (unlike my Rustler LOL) JK about the rustler, calm down Traxxas fans. I do have a rustler, And it breaks every run. BUT thats because I'm turning it into a 100MPH+ truck. I'm weeding out the weak links. |

I'll put a plug in for the Tacon Soar. I ditched the NIMH and put some cheap HK lipo in it. Seriously rips for what it is. Let the 3yr old grand kid drive it with my finger behind the throttle lol

| Tacon 1/14 and 1/12 cars are solid. I have 2. They have a buggy, short-course truck, and a monster truck on that platform. More than $100 but worth the money (brushless version). Stick with 6-cell NiMH packs, and the car won't go fast enough to hurt itself (still fast enough for a beginner to enjoy). If he gets good with it, you can put 2S lipos (cheap as shit for that size) or even 3S (no recommended for kids). |
