I was left wondering when the plot would start, and why they wasted so much time doing similar stuff over and over again.

It's a decent movie, but DID NOT live up to the hype.

All the good movies Dicaprio has put out and this movie gets him the oscar... I dont fkn understand it. The revenant was total shit.

This is how I felt about it too. Kept waiting for the plot to begin.

As a work of art it was beautiful. As a movie it was bad.

ETA: if anyone gets an oscar from that it should have been Hardy.

I had it recorded on dvr.  Ended up fast forwarding a lot of it to get it moving.

This.

It was a very well shot film.

But not enough a'splosionz for most people.

I guess I'm the odd man out here. I thought it was a really good movie. I definitely did not expect his son to die, especially the way it happened. I thought it was a very good story of good vs. evil, a father's vengeance.

I liked it.  It did a good job of taking you to the wilderness at that time, and the perils that could have been faced.  It was quiet, and long, and at times it moved slowly, but it moved, and the scenery was beautiful, but dangerous.  Probably a bit like what that whole journey would have been like.

It wasn't the best movie ever but it was entertaining. The cinematography was great and Tom Hardy stole the show. Would watch again if it ever shows up on Netflix but I probably won't buy it.

Also, this:

Real mountain men wouldn't spend that much time in freezing cold water. Other than that it was a pretty good movie. Beautifully shot.

I didn't even finish watching the movie.  From the accents and swagger in the beginning, to the long drawn out boring story, I couldn't take it anymore.

Funny how we all like different things.

Historically inaccurate.  However I enjoyed it as a whole.

I DVR'd it and tried watching it three times. I fell asleep all three times. Then I deleted it from my DVR.

Yeah I was wondering how cold water killed him dead in Titanic but he's immune to it after going a couple of rounds with a grizzly bear.

"Man in the Wilderness" is a much better movie.
Also the comment of a real mountain man not getting wet is spot on. They knew getting wet in the winter was a death sentence.

I did not care for "The Revenant" at all.

Its a very spartan, spacial movie. Very well shot and well acted.

That said its script was probably one page with a phone book of cinematographer's blocking and lighting notes behind it.

I hate when then feel like they have to had a lot of made up shit to an already fascinating true story

Because they missed the whole point of him living.

Cinematography and lighting were nothing short of outstanding.  It was certainly worth of a number of technical Oscars, but the story itself was somewhat blah.

[#44]
I was very taken with the actual story, and having been to that part of the Dakota's many times, the mountains fucking bother me. Granted it's beautifully shot, but could we just have divorced it completely from history rather than trying to shoehorn Glass's story into it? Just say it's a made-up or "original" idea, rather than jamming something with historical precedent into your art project.

And the uniform he wears in what I surmise is an example of the Arikara War is totally fucked. If you're going to do a period piece, get that shit right!

And Fuck Inarritu, for his Manifest Destiny-hating agenda.

OK..... I'm done....

No OP, a lot of us loved the movie. Keep in mind that the attention span of many GD'ers is far too short for them to enjoy many such things.

I really enjoyed the movie. It was shot with no lighting equipment, just natural light (although they might have used reflected light).

Beautiful sprawling cinematography.

Unnecessary addition of details to a great true story.

Way too much hype about Leo enduring conditions during filming to add to the Oscar Bait.

I found Man in the Wilderness, basically the same story, better. Starred Richard Harris, and John Huston.

I rented it on Redbox while I waited for my high speed internet to be set up.

It was WAY better than I expected.

It wasn't a shoot em up bang bang action movie, so I can understand some folks would get bored quickly.
