It's time to upgrade key items on my PC...in particular, my old-school spinny-type HDD, which is getting very old and tired and slow now.

I have some good bits currently.

i7 5830K

16 G PC2400 RAM

MSI X99 MB

Not so good bits...old HDD as mentioned, and a pair of GTX970's driving a 32" 1440P monitor...the monitor is nice, the cards, not so much.

I need recs on a 1T internal SSD, either M.2 or SATA3 is fine. More specifically, which ones to avoid.

I'm getting some cash back on the 970 settlement, which helps, so I'm looking at a single card solution...GTX1070 enough, or do I gotta go big on the 1080?

Again, brands to avoid?

I'm currently running W8.1, but I'm thinking about drinking the kool-aid and doing a clean install of W10, since that seems to be how you get DX12.

Thanks.

The 1070 (I am a fan of MSI, but EVGA or others are nice too) will be more than enough to drive top-tier games on that 1440p monitor. You don't need the 1080 unless you are looking to go 4k or VR, IMO.
M.2 drives are nice, but I am running the Samsung Pro 850 in my rig, and I LOVE it!

Bottom line for me:

Go Samsung or Western Digital on your SSD
MSI, EVGA, or ASUS on the 1070

I don't have too much advice on who to avoid. Most of the top brands have similar quality. I just prefer the ones I listed above.
Good luck!

E.T.A. I would personally upgrade to Win 10, especially over 8.1. DX 12 will be totally worth it, and 10 feels more like Win 7, which is a step up from 8.1 IMO. I've been fairly happy with 10.

Did EVGA fix their PWM cooling on their GP104 designs?

SSD (choose size 1, 2, 4 TB): If you want to run RAID use the pro version otherwise use the EVO. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147374

Video Card: Rumor mill is 1080ti out soonish, AMD Vega is right around the corner (Q1 / Q2), otherwise a 1070GTX is fine for your monitor (I'm assuming you want to ditch SLI). Stay away from EVGA and Gigabyte. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814127947

Windows 10 is fine, not much on the DX12 market though. Be prepared to yell at the screen sometimes. Disable automatic updates via GPO.

Good point. I have been reading about a few of those blowing up, but mostly it's been the 1080's I've heard are doing that. If I was buying one now I'd get the MSI. My 980ti has been great and is still more than enough for most games on my 1440p ultrawide.
E.T.A. It looks like they've pushed out some BIOS updates that EVGA claims will fix the overheating issue. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/evga-addresses-geforce-1080-temperature-problems,32967.html

Samsung Pro SSD. I would warn against using one as a storage drive. OS and apps, games.
I would go with an Asus gtx 1070 turbo.
Back to the SSD thing. There are lots of drives out there. Avoid sandforce based drives and my personal opinion is to avoid Intel drives. I work in IT and see way to many Intel drives die.

Thanks guys.

I put a Samsung 850 EVO 1 T drive and an MSI 1070 in the cart at Newegg...$714

I'll sleep on it and likely pull the trigger in the morning.

I've had too many gin and tonics to spend that much money now.

Honestly, for the price, you would be better served getting a smaller SSD and getting another spindle drive (or even a hybrid) for your remaining storage needs.

All right, system up and running with the new SSD and a clean install of...8.1. I paid for it, I'll use it to EOL.

Got another question...how do I import my bookmarks from Mozilla on the old hard drive to the new one?

There used to be an import/export function, but I'm buggered if I can find it.

ETA: Never mind, figured it out...I'm a dumbass.
