harbor freight and engines... expect to do repairs after every 2nd ride... Untrue! The 6.5hp Predators are good engines. I've been running 2 on my boys' karts this year and recently switched to one from B&S flathead on my kart. They respond well to mods and ya can't beat them at $99 ... Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I've got a garage full of motorcycles, very fast motorcycles. And yet I want one of these sooooooobad. Maybe to channel my youth, when I got my Rupp at 8yrs old? Who knows. Same. I've been checking CL for a minibike with a clapped engine for a cheap, fun winter project. |

Until 5 or 6 years ago there were half a dozen vendors on ebay who made minibike frames, but all they're long gone. In fact the guy I used to buy from finally sold his whole shop - welders, tubing benders, parts, etc. - on ebay and gave up. Unfortunately there's not a lot of profit margin in the minibike biz. Today just about the only game in town for reasonably priced frame kits is Azusa Engineering. http://azusaeng.com/ I've built several minibikes from Azusa frames. A couple things to keep in mind: First, you'll have to fabricate foot pegs. Azusa supplies these shitty clamp on pegs that just fold down if you put any weight on them. I usually just weld a piece of tubing across the frame in front of the engine. And the rear drum brake is a joke. You can either weld on a caliper bracket and add a disc brake on the right side of the wheel or weld the bracket on the left side and use the sprocket for the disc. So basically if you want to build an Azusa kit you're going to need a welder. A few "boutique" vendors have started producing limited numbers of minis under old names like Taco or Indian, but expect to pay big for these. You can easily spend $1k+ on these named bikes. The 6.5 HP Predator engines from HF work great for minis. They fit in the Azusa frames just fine. Just bypass the governor and pop on a 3/4" clutch and you're GTG. Lots of times you can find old frames at garage sales, swap meets, or Craigslist. Another source is a Baja "Doodlebug" - these have tiny little engines but a 6.5HP HF motor drops right in. I've bought them for less than $150 on closeouts. If you're at all interested in minis, then join OldMiniBikes.com, they're the ARFcom of minis and you'll be able to find everything you need there. http://www.oldminibikes.com/forum/ |
