I do audio recording and mixing projects using computer-based platforms. My old hardware is getting pretty old, and dated. So, I plan on migrating to a new system based around an interface that uses Thunderbolt 3 (UA Apollo, for those who are familiar). While traditionally a Mac platform when used with TB, they recently have begun certifying PC-based hardware for use with the latest version of Windows 10 (users have been using their hardware with PCs and Win7 for a while, although not officially supported).
I haven't put together a system since I assembled my last recording rig back in 2009, with Win7. That is what I still use, and plan to replace. Here are my issues: - I am really underwhelmed by what Apple has been putting out. It almost seems like paying premium prices for yesterday's performance. It really doesn't seem like an ideal solution, at this point. - Some of my friends, who are admitted Mac fanboys, have been telling me that the latest version of Win10 is a steaming pile of shit. The interface only officially supports TB3 in Win10 Anniversary. Some media sources suggest the same. - I also need a new laptop, as I am currently using a 9 yo Macbook. I'm considering just going the laptop route, and using that as the core of my rig, for now. So, how bad is the latest Win10? Is anyone running it in conjunction with TB3 devices? If so, are there any quirks that they still need to work out? If I go the laptop route, what are good sources for configurable Windows laptops that are performance-oriented, while not simply being maxed out for gaming? Should I just wait to see what shows up in the new year from Apple? I'm kind of rambling, so let me know if you need any other info. I may have skipped a point or two. |
