I'm happy they made an effort to retain a TON of the visual cues from the first movie, but some of the presentation looks a little homogenized for American audiences.
But we won't know for sure until it comes out. It could just be the way they edited the trailer. |

I bet we get an R rated director's cut, that'd be cool. I think we're going to have to give up on the nipples, but give it a year or two and there will probably be a nipple-enhanced fan edit. Anyway, looks pretty good. I saw a couple snippets that I'm pretty sure are from the spider tank battle:
Youtube, and nipply ETA I just noticed for the first time that Batou ceased fire with the anti-tank cannon because he had a nasty failure to feed that bent the shit out of the shell |

Slight tangent. What is the definitive version of the anime? I've been wanting to watch it again but I see there's like 5 versions of it out now. Depends on which "anime" you mean. There are three movies, of which there are a few different edits, and there are two full television series and two follow on specials. The movies and the TV series are kind of two different, divergent stories. IMO the TV series is superior as it is much longer and has a lot more depth to the characters and storylines. |
Basically made her doll-looking with no nipples or genitals. If that's all it takes to get PG-13, that's fine. But that probably means we won't get to see a guy's head explode after getting shot between the eyes. ![]() I recognized at least 3-4 shots that were taken directly from the '95 anime movie. Could be good. And Togusa better have a goddamn Mateba. |

What order should they be watched in? I saw and loved the '95 movie way back when it first came out, but I haven't really seen anything made since. |

I was referring to the one the YouTube link above is from. That clip is from the first movie. There are two different edits of that movie, the original and the newer "2.0" version. They are the same movie, just that the new one replaced a lot of of the older CG effects, changed the color palate of some shots and added new effects to other shots. Think of it as the "Special Edition" version of the first movie. |

Well, the movies and the TV show are divergent until a certain point... they use the same characters in the same places, but they have vastly differing plots. So the way to watch them is probably start with the movies and watch the first two in order (original or 2.0 first, then Innocence). These two movies are stand together but separate from the TV series. After you watched them, pretty much forget everything you watched from a plot standpoint and switch over to the TV series. Watch The Standalone Complex first, followed by 2nd Gig and the Solid State Society special. THEN watch the new "Arise" series, which is pretty much a another take on the premise in both movie then converted to TV show format. Then after Arise watch the "new" movie, which continues the Arise setup. |

| Interesting. I didn't think the plot would have any similarities to the Anime. Don't know why. Just a distrust of Hollywood in general I guess. That it is coming in March is a sign the studio isn't overly optimistic about its success. I'll have to see it anyway. The original is the best sci-fi movie I have ever seen. |
| Interdasting. Seems anime is having a comeback. Just read a Forbes article about a live action Robotech movie in the works. |

Folks shouldn't get too hung up on the rating just yet.
IMO the superior GitS to date are the TV shows, and they are very mild from a nudity and violence standpoint. What makes GitS "special" is its complex stories and the deeply developed world and characters. If there is anything that "worries" me about this movie it is that they will "dumb down" everything too far in order to appease short attention span audiences. |

What does Ghost in the Shell have to do with the Matrix? Really nothing, except that it was one of the million things that inspired the Wachowski "sisters" to create the Matrix. GitS was born out of Masamune Shirow's ever evolving attempts to make the perfect cyberpunk epic, and it was born in the 80s during Japan's big cyberpunk boom. And in many respects the "modern" GitS anime movies and TV shows are a child born of many fathers. We would not have the Standalone Compex without things like Bubblegum Crisis, Megazone 23, Silent Mobeus, and a shit ton of other concurrently created Japanese cyberpunk comics and animes that paved the way and influeced what GitS eventually became. |

What does Ghost in the Shell have to do with the Matrix? Besides ripping off visual cues, GiTS was about asking what it means to be human. How much of your body can you replace and still be human? Can you transplant a brain into a new body and still be human? Matrix was about asking the question "what is reality?" I am super excited about this movie, but it looks like they're going off the Oshii first flick, which was amazing but had no Fuchikomas like the manga, which I loved. I hope the movie does well, as 1) Masamune Shirow is awesome, and 2) the Robotech flick needs to be made. |

That is a fundamental question about life that has been asked by many people and has been the premise of many works of fiction. GitS did not originate that. |

I expect it'll be so phreaky, I won't understand half of what the fuck I just saw.
