Try to get at least a 5 gallon tank and decent compressor on it anything less sucks, I have a 3 gallon and a 5 gallon and the smaller one needs to recharge after 5 seconds of use and takes forever.

something like this would likely work well for you
https://www.amazon.com/Makita-MAC2400-Big-Bore-Compressor/dp/B0001Q2VPK/ref=sr_1_2?s=power-hand-tools&ie=UTF8&qid=1478730101&sr=1-2&keywords=makita+compressor

here's a smaller one for a flooring nailer or something like that but the compressor is like 15x weaker which is almost useless.

What will be its main use?

Do you need psi, cfm, or both?

Biggest you can afford at a price you can afford.

Actually....most compressors now a days have a chart that is attached to the machine.  It will tell you what common tools are useable or not recommended with that set up. Even if you're not planning to paint your car in the garage, using an air driven sander takes up a lot of air.

This. You running a paint sprayer or just airing up tires/running a brad nailer? If the latter, just get a pancake style compressor from Harbor Freight.

Porter Cable red pancake compressor.
You can catch them on sale for $99.
Lots of good sales between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Thanks, had a 25 gal porter cable, 90 psi, lasted  for 15 years. Pretty sure it died today. It tried to start up. but wouldn't go. Now plugged in doesn't make a sound. All it was really used for was putting air in tires for a 4 wheeler business. Not anymore, figured pancake type. All I need is something for airing up tires now, just not as many. Thanks for all the help.
