make sure it has a clean ESN/IMEI, ie not stolen

Make sure they don't owe the carrier money or the carrier will lock it.  Ask me how I know....in my case she owed Sprint $.

Buy an Apple re-certified one but if you choose CL or Ebay make sure you verify it's not stolen. Check the IMEI number with the carrier or a number of free online sites; any legit seller should gladly provide it to verify.

If previous owner still has it linked to their "find my iPhone" it's a brick.

Sorry, but buying a used phone as a Christmas gift for my (step) daughter would be the issue all by itself.
If you can't afford a new one or Verizon cannot offer a deal to make it affordable, then get her something else OP.

I recently bought a Mac on Craigslist that locked itself when I tried to wipe it Apple was no help I had to buy a efi pin cracker to use my laptop I would suggest buying it at the carrier store and having it wiped and put into your name before exchanging cash

No, never. All used phones are perfectly fine.

Seriously, what kind of answer do you want? Anything used is a gamble. The less informed you are, the bigger the gamble.

I prefer new phones. The battery could be totally shot and you wouldnt know until you get it and use it for a few days.

If there's nothing wrong with it and it's not locked then you'll be ok. If you're on Verizon then you'll want a Verizon phone.

Lolwtf. If she wants a 6  then why shouldn't the OP buy a used one and save some money?

OP, make sure the IMEI is clean, there are websites you can run it through, and maybe even call Verizon and ask (I don't know if they'll tell you.) Also make sure it's not in lost mode and make sure there's no current iCloud account signed in. If you're buying on EBay you should be protected in case you get a locked phone. As for the specific model you'll need a Verizon one if you want to use it on Verizon. The unlocked GSM phones don't have the radio bands you'll need on Verizon. The good news is the Verizon ones are also unlocked and do have the GSM bands so if you wanted to use a Verizon phone on a GSM carrier you'd be able to do so.

I did it before. No problems.

AS others said make sure it not on the guys icloud account or you cant use it.

Guy I got it from was super nice, so all that was cleared up in minutes with a text.

There are so many ifs with Craigslist (and the like) used phones that I would not buy one.

Stolen, "find my phone" still enabled, etc.   As has been said, just go buy one from a cellular vendor and do the monthly payment option if you don't have the 800+ for a brand new one.

The GSM only phones don't have the CDMA bands that you need if you actually want to make calls with your phone on Verizon.

EDIT: WTF. Verizon says you can use a non-Verizon iPhone as long as it's 6 or higher on their network. Apple says the GSM iPhones don't have the CDMA radios though. I don't know what's up with that.
