Some punk kids stole the hitch lock kit out of my jeep that had the keys to the trailer lock.  Need to know the key number to get a replacement key.  Anything I can try before calling a locksmith?

Its a master lock, pretty easy to bump, pick or check out youtube for videos on how to defeat it.

Rap it - or shim it.

That lock will break long before any damage is done to your hitch

Yep. That's the reason I'll never use a Master on anything I own.

I can open one, without a key, in seconds.

I'd try raking it first with a decent rake and torsion bar.
may have to single pin pick it though

If it has a brass cylinder a drill will open it pretty quick.

Get your own pick set. Standard keyed padlocks are usually a breeze.

half diamond pick and a windshield wiper and I'll have that open in 15 seconds.

Ignore the guys who are saying rap or shim it or cut it with bolt cutters. They're all talking about regular padlocks.

Do you have a lock pick set? If not, I'll loan you mine. I should be near West Valley or West Jordan tomorrow.

I have a set of bump keys and a snap gun as well. Masterlocks aren't usually that hard. They might have a mushroom or a spool pin in them, but you can usually pick them or shim them pretty easily.

ETA: Watching the video on the masterlock site, I doubt the bump keys would fit. The keyway might be a little tricky, but it would be fun to try it for a bit.

And never mind shimming. Not that kind of lock.

An angle grinder would destroy that lock in 30 seconds.

Just need about a 2.5" ID pipe (worth a view if you have a fancy boat with a crappy trailer lock.)

Have you looked at the lock he's talking about? How would you get the pipe over that style of lock?

What about the combo spin around ones?

I've still got my lock from elementary school somewhere, only combo lock I know the combo to.

a 12 dollar harbor freight angle grinder and a 5 dollar pack of cutting wheels will have that off in a couple minutes.

that's what I did when the same thing happened to me.

This!

When I was a kid I watched Magnum P.I.

I was amazed that he could pick locks !

I swore, when I grew up I would learn to do the same.... and I did !

It's really easy when you learn how to do it.

5lb sledge should remove that lock in less than 30 seconds without any more than paint damage to the trailer tongue.

Does it take a regular master lock key?
Do you have a few other master locks?
If the key fits in the lock, rake bump jiggle and turn.

That works on shitty gun locks too.
