I have an HP that is about 5 years old. The black ink needed replaced. After doing so it will not print black. I have done and tried everything recommended but nothing seems to help.

I need a dependable all in one ink jet. Recommendations?

Don't get an ink jet.

Buy a used lexmark laser printer.

Why not get a laser? They aren't that expensive any more. I don't do much printing so I'll never buy another inkjet personally. I need to get my mother a new printer for Christmas though so this thread is relevant to my interests.

Laser.

Just B&W, or color?

You can pick up a used HP LaserJet 2300 on eBay for under $80 . . . delivered.

Black only, but you'll never wear it out.

Mine is 6 years old and approaching 350K copies.

Agreed.... but no real need to go used.  Laser printers have gotten considerably cheaper.... HP and Brother both make some very affordable home models.

OP... do you use your printer a lot?  If not, Laser is really the best way to go.  Inkjet's, the ink gums up, etc.  It happened to me a few times before I bought a Laserjet.  Little more expensive, but it works great.

I went to HP laserjets some time back, do you really need fax capability?

My cell phone takes better pictures than a scanner did ten years ago.

Sadly they don't make one that uses it. I researched that last night right after posting the OP

All the brother laser stuff here, what model do you all have.

I need the fax to send PO's to a couple distributors. Not sure how that phone fax stuff works. Maybe need to look into that

HL-2270DW here. One of their cheapest. I've had it for about 2.5 years with zero issues , I don't print a lot though.

Way better track record than any ink jet I've had.

A Brother All in One lazer.  I've never used the fax on mine but everything else works great.  The Brother AIO lazer we had at the office I worked at sent many  many faxes,  though.

Don't get an ink jet if you use it infrequently. If you let those sit, the ink dries up in the printer nozzles.

We have a small business that requires an all in one in our office, and in our home.  I've been through about 6 printers between the two in the past 10 years.

We used to go with Brother laser printers, but the toner and drum (drums should be changed after every 2nd or 3rd toner changer--name brand drums are $150!!!) cost was just ridiculous, and aftermarket drums and toners may be cheaper, but they quickly destroy the machine.

Last year I grabbed a new model HP all in one laser printer, because the new HP machines don't use drums.  So far, it has been ok, but the print time is slower.

Last week, I found a brand new Brother ink jet all in one that promises to be great--very high yield ink cartridges that are less than $20 to replace.

Also, Staples has aN aftermarket warranty program for about $35 for 3 years of coverage.   If it breaks during that period (I have yet to own an all in one that gets substantial use that lasts 3 years), you get a gift card in the full amount of what you paid for the printer, no questions asked.  I even made sure the coverage works if you use aftermarket ink/toner (it does).

The Brother model is the MFC-J5830DW.

This is what you seek

Brother MFC-L8850 CDW

Wireless networking, print server, fax, color scan, color print, under $500

If you want B&W only, similar machine is only $200

They last and last in a home environment.   If you plan to be printing over 50 pages a day, every day, you may want to look at higher end, such as a Ricoh, but there's a starting point.

No ink to dry up, sits in power save most of the time, and just always works as long as you load it with decent paper.
