| can pilots traveling at SS speeds hear the noise from their own engines? I would think not, but I often wrong on these type things so an explanation either way would be appreciated. just curious, serious question. no treadmills involved. |

They would still hear vibrations through the fuselage but sound from the outside would be slower than the plane itself and never reach the cockpit. Nothing but a hiss of air moving past the canopy, a vibration/hum of the engines and the normal cockpit sounds (AC blowers, avionics fans, etc...) |

Having flown Mach1+ twice in an F16, you hear the engine and wind noise the entire time, it does not change going SS but the "ride" gets a bit softer in a Viper. There is a tiny bit of buffet as you go transonic. |

There's still subsonic and transonic air in the boundary layer of various surfaces of the plane.
There's also plenty of air moving at almost zero velocity relative to the aircraft inside the various small voids inside the fuselage in-between all the wires and hydraulics etc. So the overall decibels wouldn't change a whole lot for a given altitude and air pressure. |

I totally get there is sound of air and associated rattles. I was curious only about the sound of the engines. you know that sort of droneing roar that you can hear on a passenger jet or you hear on the ground as a military jet flies overhead. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
