It was an awesome place to grow up in the late 60's.  Haven't been back since the late 70's.

It's not there anymore.    As Shep Smith said: Every Man Women and Child is Gone!!!.  Pet are Dead too.     The Bodies will not found, and can Never be found.   Fox news won't be covering the funerals.

It's great. My boss has a house he's let me stay at there in key colony and I love it. It's great fishing/snorkeling and has plenty of places with awesome food.

rent/hotels are a fraction of the price compared to key west.

It's only an hour or so drive from key west depending on traffic. Anyone who travels to key west it's mandatory to go to Bein's (formally known as Paseo's). Best sandwiches there hands down.

Overall if you like the keys but want to stay away from all the bullshit key west throws at you marathon is where you wanna be.

Meh, hot as hell and humid the majority of the year.  Not much to do, unless you are into boating, offshore fishing, snorkeling, etc.  It's quite a drive to either Key West or Islamorada.

Not my cup of tea. YMMV

I've enjoyed several winter vacations there at two resorts: Tranquility Bay and Hawks Cay. Both were great for relaxation, sun, pool...

There are several very good nearby restaurants, and a few local attractions.

Nice base for a day trip to Key West.

And supposedly, the fishing is good, but I don't fish.

I had great times, but more for just total relaxation. Not so much sight-seeing.

BTW, if you take a day trip to Key West (which you should), LEAVE EARLY. The last time we were there, the traffic into KW was a total clusterfuck.

Also try to plan accordingly for travel. Trying to drive down to the keys on a Friday afternoon is hectic. You'll sit in miles long traffic down US1 filled with trucks and boats on trailers and then the same thing leaving the keys coming back on Sunday.

I stay down in the keys a few months at a time throughout the year for work. I also drove down Sunday's and came back to swfl on Fridays. Worked out really well.

There's nothing to do in Marathon except drink and fish. It's fucking awesome! Have fish tacos and happy hour wings at Sparky's in KCB. After you close down Sparky's, drink till 4am at the Brass Monkey. Then get on a boat and go fishing at 8am!

Out of all the keys it is the one I like the best, but fuck all of FL for the humidity.

My parents have a place there on the water, I concur with this post.

In addition great access to fishing on the Atlantic or Gulf side, great diving, overall my favorite key to stay on.  Tons of stuff to do.

Seems decent enough when I drive through on the way to my place in Key West.  Gone out of their for some fishing before too, seems nice enough, don't know if I would want to live there though.

It sure doesn't work very well.

Every time I visit I hear more and more new yark accents.

I like it. If you like to dive, snorkel, or fish you probably will too.  Less hectic than the other ends of the keys. Not exactly as "getaway" as what you might imagine though. There is a home depot in Marathon.

Although it looks scary from the road, The rooms at banana bay resort had just been remodeled and were pretty nice for the price.

Burdines is good.  The Stuffed pig had a great burger.
