Went out drinking with the fellas last week. Knocked back about 8 beers and there were a few(?) shots involvved as well... I was down for about 2 days due to just feeling like shit. I get that the hangovers get worse as you get older but I look at some 50-60 year old alcoholics we encounter and I just can't figure out how they do it.

After a rough night - I don't even want to think about booze for a week. These people can do it *Everyday*.

Yup.
Another good example is smokers.
If a non smoker took in as much nicotine as a pack a day regular, they would be so sick they would be down for the count.

A now deceased family member managed to spend ~30 years with a constant blood alcohol level that would net you a DUI at best and a trip to the emergency room at worst.
He practiced law, became a judge and eventually retired.
Only got one DUI and that was later in life when he blacked out behind the wheel and hit a few parked cars.
He took a trip to the ER as a result and they found that he was utterly riddled with cancer, he died a few months later.

Another uncle used to drink a bottle of scotch and ride his Harley home like it was nothing.

Me, if I have more then two drinks I am out of action the next day. Yes, I have become that much of a lightweight.
As a result, I seldom drink.

Because for them being drunk is more pleasant than being sober.

Usually just a shot or two in the coffee in the morning makes the transition to the day less miserable, then some beers with lunch, and hit the bar after work.
Or just grind through the day and dream of the sweet relief of getting wasted again.
Sad, ugly, existence, but hey, that's what the booze are for right?
You'd never think a person would miss such a shit life ever, but you'd be wrong.

Light weight.

The trick is to learn how your body reacts to alcohol.  Then, you know the rate you can drink at without getting a hangover.

Also, quit drinking a while before you go to bed, and drink enough (not too much) water.  Too much water lowers your electrolyte level too much.

Lol, lightweight, I call that an average Tuesday evening.

Seriously, I go through about 2 cases of beer a week and have a couple hundred bucks worth of whiskey on the shelf, some would consider me an alcoholic. Yet I suffer from cluster headaches. I get them about 2 months out of the year. Alcohol is the biggest trigger for them so as of right now I've been sober for a little under 3 weeks. I didn't suffer any withdrawals, it's just that time of year to quit drinking.

I don't get hangovers unless I really tie one on, 8 beers and a couple shots doesn't even come close.

So I've been sober for 3 weeks and have about 5 weeks left to go. I can't wait to dive right back in, sobriety fucking sucks.

Sorry about your weak disposition OP

About nicotine...when I was in my prime bar hoping days I figured out the smoking thing ' maybe . I never smoked and some of the bars had poor vents or low ceilings and im sure I got contact highs...I would feel great that night and the next day feel like shit in the morning and what ever I wore the night before smelled like a camp fire...Then the smoking ban in clubs happened  and the hangovers where much better...I think the nicotine made me feel really great and feel good and I drank more...Made me think about how much people like to smoke and how hard to stop...Maybe not...No longer a issue...

1/2 right.

Addictive personality is real. Be it food, drugs, sex, adrenaline, etc.

The "issues" are a side effect or sometimes the reason, but not always one or the other.

I hate an alcoholic.  Rather I hate a belligerent booze head, same way I hate a belligerent dug addict.

I have my demons, but it has NEVER affected someone else everyday life. I think those addicted to booze are just as bad a hard drug addict. And I have never seen nor met someone who was "addicted' to pot. Be it a physical addiction, rarely mental for pot.

Just because we all have a brain, it does not mean they are all wired the same. There is not ANSI standard when it comes to a building a human.
Same thing with other mammals. I dont think a majority of people can grasp that concept.

It's relative.  A person who is chronically unhealthy, their "normal" is feeling like crap.  It's their baseline.  So, since they always feel like crap, the slightly more crappy feeling of a bad hangover is closer to their baseline.

A healthy, or less unhealthy, person really feels the difference.

I drink just enough now, to remind myself, why I don't drink that much.   Alcohol is really one of the worst intoxicants.  It's an absolutely shitty drug.

I have a neighbor who has been a functioning alcoholic for thirty years. He ends late and starts early.

drinking and I can see the world with such clarity. Four months later he was back in the bottle.

I feel better since a stopped drinking. Both mentally and physically.

I used to drink about as much as my rent per month......sometimes more.

I could kill a fifth of Gray Goose a night and go to work the next day and kick ass with a terrible hangover.

One day, after a night with two German exchange students ( females you fags!) I woke up about 2pm...hungover, feeling like shit, I realized that my drinking just hit a pinnacle moment.
"I doubt I could top this". I missed some epic surf, felt guilty for not being more productive, ALTHOUGH two hot chics was a plus, it did not outweigh what i should have been doing....on a internal personal level.

Being raised by a Bos'n Mate, it was hard to lay around all day and feel "normal"....so there is that.

Only time I drink now is when a good Shiner Bock and steak is on the table, or when the doc gives me some pills that keep me up......3 L.I Teas and I am able to sleep.

Not to mention the money I save at the bar, now I can buy mo gunz and ammoes, and can take long weekend motorcycle trips. Its all a personal thing I suppose
