Is there a drone thread, I am looking for a drone and I know nothing about them, I have a budget of close to 1k.  It will be for when we vacation and travel along with playing around outside the house. I would like a 4k camera on it I don't want to have to buy a gopro  on top of buying the drone. I have never owned one but they look like fun.

DU is that way ======>

nah there is one here but I havent seen it in GD for a while it might have gotten buried. How long can you wait? the gopro karma may be the answer as it has a gopro, quad, gimbal stabilizer and is set at 1K, i'd wait and see how it stacks up before FO'ing though as it has yet to be available.

What is a P4? Phantom?  Here are the ones I have found that I like.

YUNEEC Q500 4K Typhoon

DJI T600 Inspire 1 - I am hoping to find one on sale  or the new model will come out and this one will drop in price.

DJI Phantom 4

I really like the Yuneec because the controller has a little screen but a downside could be the little screen.

naptow do you mean this?

I would hang tight till this coming tuesday. DJI will be announcing their new Mavic Drone. It's a super compact folding drone that is going to be another game changer. Its been said the pricing will start at $450 and go up from there. This will be perfect for taking on vacation etc.

GoPro just announced their Karma drone, available in October.  It is more than a drone though, it is a whole stabilized video platform.  If you buy the package they drop the price of the GoPro camera by $100 and the gimbal for the drone also work son the camera stick.

They have promo videos out about it but here is a real life vlogger using and reviewing it.  He also talks about the Phantom 4.

I will do build one I just don't know where to start. When the wife and I are on vacation it would be nice to use for some pictures at the beach and when we travel. I also live near a forest preserve so I have a lot of room to play with it around the house, there is a airfield about a mile from the house but a drone is what I am interested in. The racing ones look cool but how is the video? I saw the gopro one and it looks cool I am interested to know if you can move the camera around while it hovers and the fact that I will have to buy a gopro I have one but its a older one I would want a 5 then and 100 bucks off doesn't seem like that great of a deal.

Here you go:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1895670_Heads_up_if_anyone_is_thinking_about_buying_a_drone_.html

The Phantom 4 is what you seek.  It has a 4K camera, a very nice gimbal system and an extremely stable flight and hover, it's like gluing yoir camera to the sky.  It is also very newbie friendly, you can take it right out of the box and start flying and it does all the work for you, I find the controls to be a lot like a video game, you'll be flying like you have years of practice in minutes, and it even has a built in flight simulator that uses your actual controller.  It also has forward collision aboidance built in, if you're aboit to crash into something it will automatically brake and not allow you to do it.  You can even use tap fly and just tap your screen in the direction you want to fly, a toddler could fly it.  Not to mention things like automatic visual tracking of targets (while keeping them centered in the shot, digital zoom (when shooting in 1080P), slow motion (also in 1080P), waypoint flying, automatic orbits, redundant sensors, both GPS and GLONAS, and a smart return to home which uses the obstacle avoidance along the way.  It also can fly up to 45 miles per hour without a tailwind, has a range of 5 Kilometers (assuming no interference) and a usuable flight time of 20-25 minutes.  Just to name a few things.

It is onsale for $1,200 right now, but if your in school you can get it discounted down to $1,080.  The whole kit comes in a decent foam case which can fit in a decent MOLLE pack.

If you want to go slightly cheaper and still get a pretty damn hood drone you might consider the Phantom 3 professional.

DJI is also set to release the Mavic on Tuesday, details are not officially known het but it appears to have most of the features of the Phantom 4 in a more convenient package at the cost of range.  I would look at that before KARMA (the new GoPro drone) assuming you don't want a Phantom.

Here's an example of the Phantom 4's collision avoidance at work saving this guy from a total loss $$$. These things are getting very smart and easier to fly with more automated systems every time they come out with a newer model.

It's very nice, but I would hold off.  The Phantom 4 is the nicer bird in my opinion, better standard camera (I'm not talking about the Inspire Pro), much more portable, and has way more smart features.  That said the Inspire theoretically has duel operator (it would need a second pilot camera to be true duel operator), a camera that can rotate 360 degrees and is interchangeable, slightly better speed and wind handling, and it is sexy, but just not worth it.  Also, the Inspire 2 is likely to come out soon and address those issues.

Is the DJI Inspire 1 worth it. My birthday is next month and I am thinking about asking my wife for it and telling her I will give her 1k and she can put up the rest.

Thanks, I will wait to see the Mavic and see what else is coming out. I told my wife I will give her close to 1k and she will double it so I am interested in the 4 and the Inspire unless the mavic has some really nice features. I am looking for good distance. I am also looking at the FAA website for law/rules so I am not that guy.
