I have a 2001 Scag turf tiger.  It has the 27hp Kawasaki fd750d liquid cooled engine, with 1100 hrs on the meter.  

It's received regular maintenance on it since I bought it new.  It has never used much oil.  While walking by it this morning I just thought I'd check it.

I was surprised to see it just below the add mark.  

What is causing the oil consumption?   It's not leaking anywhere.

Any suggestions?

Valve stem seals, rings, who knows.  It's a lawn mower, dump some Lucas in it.

How many hours to burn how much oil?  Every engine burns some oil.

Quickly check to make sure the crankcase vent is clear and not plugged forcing oil through the valve seals and crankcase with pressure.

You can try a thicker oil viscosity and see if its any better. Check your spark plug is it coated in oil? Compression tests would give you a better idea of whats going on inside.

Could be time for a tear down or replace.


eta: check your air filter as well. They updated them a while back. if its a white looking filter i belive thats the old crappy style thats lets ALOT of stuff pass through. your dealer will have the updated style, i want to say there pink or orange.

How many hours on an oil change?

How many hours on the motor?

What sort of other PM stuff have you done?

Where is the crankcase vent located?

The spark plugs are dark on the normally white insulator part,  but not coated in oil.

The air filter is the white kind and it is not plugged.  It's pretty clean actually.

Currently running 10w30 synthetic.  I usually go a season on an oil change, approximately 90 hours.   This oil currently has 63 hours on it.

Other pm would be fuel filters, spark plugs, coolant changes, air filters, grease, hydro oil... I try to stay on top of it.

1100 hours since I bought it new.

I wouldn't worry about it. Mine burns oil thru the valve seals and I just top it up when it needs it. Starts with puff of smoke every week.

run it until it won't cut no more
