I once was thinking of buying a car from an individual.  I ran a Carfax and saw that it had a salvage title.  Worked well for me.

It's only as good as the information that is reported to it. It's a good starting point but don't use it as gospel.

My old 1993 Accord was submerged in 3 feet of water in 1994 (insurance fixed it, would have been totalled but it was pretty much a brand new car)

I hit an Isuzu Rodeo from behind in 1995, trashing the entire front end (police report filed, I paid out of pocket for both vehicles).  I was driving in front of Sorority Row and there was lots of spandex around, so I was distracted........

It was in another few fender benders where I just fixed it out of pocket.

The last time it was wrecked I was rear-ended, totalled the car out, I bought it back from the insurance company and had it patched up well enough to keep driving it. (police and insurance involved in that one, other driver was charged with agg assault)

When I got ready to sell that car, it came back ALL green checkmarks.

Anyone who puts any faith AT ALL  in Car Fax is an idiot.

I'll be shopping for a new car in the next few months.  Lots of floods around lately - God Bless the folks in La.

Probably go for brand new.

Insurance and body shop. (the latter at request)

Car Fax isn't 100% accurate. Most people have had cases where people pay out of pocket so their rates won't increase. My last car was almost totaled (should have been actually ) but never reported 6 months after I sold it.
Before I bought my last car, I took it to a body shop and gave the manager $50 to look it over in the parking lot. He pointed out some blemishes in the paint which, I would have never noticed and checked the door seems. Seller then admitted it was in a minor fender bender.

Mine was in quite a few body shops, and was fixed by insurance several times, with the last incident before I sold it resulting it in being totalled out.  All green.

Carfax is a joke.  Complete waste.
