trying to connect an asus zenbook n501vw to a samsung syncmaster 305t.
the monitors native resolution is 2560x1600 with dvi input. I found a random hdmi to dvi (18 pin) cable laying around the office but when i plug it in i only get a max 1280x800.

can i get the full resolution with a hdmi to 24 pin dvi cable or do i need some other gizmo?

You need dual link DVI-D. Does your cable look like the below on the left?

no the random old one i found laying around looks like the one on the right.

the laptop doesn't have dvi output though, so will an hdmi to dvi dual link actually work?

Should. You want a dual-link DVI-D to HDMI cable.

Edit: See this thread  May be more complicated...
